3rd year for a SFG/should rhubarb/horseradish be up yet? Empty 3rd year for a SFG/should rhubarb/horseradish be up yet?

Post  itsablondething 3/10/2012, 10:02 am

Hoping I've learned enough and have gotten good enough at this in 3 years, because I decided to NOT join the local CSA this year. Last year, I had way too much produce between my SFG and the CSA. Though I am thinking about putting one more 4x8 in (to make a total of 4 4x8s, and 3 4x4s)

I have no new growth yet on the horseradish or rhubarb I planted last year. I am not sure what to expect. Does anyone know if I should be seeing growth yet? I am in zone 6.

My peppermint, spearmint, and catnip are all definately back though. As well as parsley, oregano, and strawberries.

My biggest new thing this year is trying to start most of my own plants... currently have nice sprouts of cabbage, broccoli, chard, lettuce, spinach and kale (along with coleus and snapdragon.. waiting for the petunia, impatients, and geraniums to sprout) in my basement.

Hoping to get my peas, onions, parsnips, salsify, carrots... and try some radishes... out this weekend. With the weather forcast, I can't see a reason to wait until St Pattys day as we traditionally do in this area.

I also got myself some asparagus crowns to put in (but not in my SFG... will simply plant these along my fence. )

Each year the lay out of cash has been smaller too, and it looks like I have a nice amount of my own compost finally. However, since I am growning more of my own seeds, I just spent a truckload on 2 more shoplights and bulbs.. but I figure in a few years (or maybe just this one) it will pay for itself.

What's happeing in YOUR garden world right now?? I'd love to hear everyone else's garden stories.

It's early yet. Soon.
