I'm in Chicago and planted my crowns last year. They have been under about 5" of leaves and will be uncovered tomorrow. Getting REALLY excited to see mine come up!

kev.....your cute little asparagus is so cute that it inspired me to buy three root crowns ( not sure thats what ya call them) from our local nursery Very Happy

do i need to do anything special when i plant them?

I checked mine when I brought out some kitchen scraps for the composter after saving some for my worms.

Nothing up yet. I'm in Zone 5a in Maine.

Family.....You need to bury your crowns at least 6" deep with the roots spread out like a large full skirt. Cover with a couple inches of soil. Wait for some growth, then backfill with another few inches of soil.

The Washington series, I think I read, needs to be buried 12" deep but Jersey Knight only needs 6". Its a plant to bury in a trench and refill as it grows, like you plant potatoes.

GWN.....Some ice on the ground as well as old snow, but large patches of open soil, also. The sunshine has been doing its thing the last couple of days so I'm hoping to get out in my garden soon.

Sounds like we really are the same zone.... exactly.
Maybe we will have asparagus next week. I am not sure if you have read Barbara Kingsolvers book "animal vegetable miracle"
She spent a year living off her land (and the community) (essentially the 100 mile diet) and could not decide what day to start this project, and in the end, she started the day that the asparagus came up. Very Happy

actually, since they take years to mature, and if you like asparagus, you should start as many as you can.
5 years from now you will be glad you did.

I have started asparagus in SOO many places and then situations changed and I moved..... I feel I have left behind SO many asparagus.....

i think you maybe right GWN ....when the rain slow's down i think i will go measure the spot i want to plant them in and see how many i can fit there.....we have a spot in our back garden that is not that easy to get to......well...we can get to it but its in an awkward spot..... i thought it would be a great spot to plant something that i dont have to do a lot with....just plant something that will produce each year and grow on its own....and after seing that really cool pick i thought of asparagus Very Happy

Family,

I planted a ton of asparagus last year(due to a good deal on them).I soaked them in water for 30 min or so,then planted using the method that's already been described.Alot came up fast,haha.We'll see what I end up with,I planted 2 and 3 yr old crowns.

Oh I remember those first 2 years after I planted my asparagus bed. It was SOOOO hard to resist! I planted 2-3 year old crowns as well, but let them mature in my bed for 2 years before I harvested! My beds got infested with bermuda grass 3 years ago and it's been an uphill battle ever since. Still freezing at night here with nice warm days and I'm about 1/3 of the way through reworking the bed and pulling all the bermuda grass I can get out. By next week I'll be ready to lay 6" of compost and then wait for those luscious spears!

Hi Temptation what zone are you in?

I planted 3 year old crowns last year as well as several plants I had grown from seed. They take about 3 months to germinate, or so it seemed.
It WILL be VERy hard not to pick them this year...... but I will not.

I just bought some Jersey Knight crowns... I am going to be planting them along the fence in my backyard since I have limited space.

I was excited to see some pictures!

I'd read up a bit about growing asparagus before I ventured to buy them. The general feeling was that 1-year crowns work best. 2-yr crowns take longer to come back from the transplant and the same goes for older crowns. I bought Jersey Knight 1-yr crowns and planted last year. You only have to plant them 6" deep as opposed to some that require a 12" planting depth, and they are mostly male plants so they produce a lot more than those with several female plants among them.

Anyone wishing to plant them, should find out all they can online. There's lots of info out there on the web before you take the plunge.

I purchased 6 Jersey Giant yesterday from our local Lowes store. They were packed 3 per pack, and dry as a bone when I opened them up. The instructions said to plant them 2" deep. (I may have gotten them 3" down) And after reading your post, am wondering if they are deep enough?? thinking

I am in zone 5 and it seems as though everyone else's asparagus are up, at least those in zone 5.
What I am thinking is one of two things is true
Either I am NOT In zone 5 OR my asparagus are dead......

Mine is not up either .....they don't usually come up until closer to Easter.

We shared the first lonely spear raw from the bed 3 days ago. It was delicious. Harvested 3 spears today and put them in a cup of water on the sink. Should be able to cut another 5-7 spears in the next couple of days. There is so much coming up so early I really hope we don't have a hard freeze that hurts those tender babies. I'm in zone 8b.
