Poor babies,

When acclimating your plants to the outdoors, you do want to protect them from direct sunlight at first, then later allow them only an hour or so in direct sun, gradually increasing the direct sun everyday until they can stay out all day without stressing.

I can't believe your area is having such warm weather. I'm hoping we have an earlier spring than normal, like last year. Right now my gardens are still covered with over a foot of snow. Lucky you.

Looks like they'll be okay since they went into the shade IMMEDIATELY when they started drooping. Very Happy
Here's my broccoli a few hours later:

A few hours later, while turning the compost pile, I remembered they were still out and rushed back expecting the worst!

You're right about the mild Chicago Winter, quiltbea. Here's hoping it holds up. Hope your weather takes a turn for the better, soon!

So far, Today looks great for more outside work and acclimating (thanks Furbalsmom!) seedlings.

Stepping Out... 728280 admin,
They all look a bit better this a.m. and will be "stepping out" in an hour or so! They'll need protection from some pretty strong and gusty winds, though!

After yesterday's scare the broccoli stayed in the doorway and was only allowed to look outside. No
Plus, I'd decided to try my hand at constructing a hoop house for those "plantlings", so I wouldn't be able to keep such a close eye on them today.

I'm sure they had a great laugh, as did my DW Stepping Out... 262465 , watching me try to lay plastic over the hoop frames while the wind was gusting near 30mph. Stepping Out... 926169

At least you have cold hardy plants out there. Last night I had to put half of my tomatos out in the cold greenhouse heated only with Christmas lights and a grow light spotlight. No room at the Inn. But they came through like champs. Outside temp 34 inside temp 41. They will probably be slowed way down, but they are alive.

Kay

BTW, I lived in Downers Grove for 2 years and put starts out in a unheated plastic plant house successfully. It didn't freeze but was still too cold to put into the ground.

Kay,
Although I've been acclimating/hardening off some of them, my "Inn" space has gotten scarce, too! So it just seemed like the right time (mid 40's forecast for tonight) to move the cold hardy ones out like you say.

While living in the Chicago area you likely became aware of the often "freaky" microclimate near Lake Michigan! My outdoor thermometer reached 80 deg. this p.m. in my "unheated plastic plant house". The instrument read 68 deg. at 5 p.m., and I decided to close up and leave the "starts" right where they were.

If all goes well, they'll get some company tomorrow.

Seedlings are growing well!
Problem with my artichokes, though! (see earlier pics above) I've been fighting this pest for several days but damage continues. Any help would be welcome!

In the foremost plant, the tip of the smaller, center leaf has been eaten away. See the hole in the seed leaf of the other plant?

Is that "something" the thing that is on that leaf, Looks like the teensy snail that someone else had a picture of from their worm farm.

I have in the past had issues with bug on artichokes and the advise given to me was to wash them off with a gentle spraying of water.

Glad to see someone else growing artichokes Stepping Out... 3170584802

Thanks for the feedback,GWN.
That "something" is a hole in the artichoke's seed leaf. I think it was made by a slug, but I can't find it on or near the plant. Maybe somehow I got rid of what's eating my plants. The cool weather might help, too!

I have been living in Oregon where the slugs are HUGE, but up here, they can be quite tiny, and I would agree, you might have a teensy weensy slug problem.
I have been hardening my artichoke plants out in the cold to see if that might induce them to flower this year....
So I have really left them out in the cold, they have been out on many sub freezing nights one night down to 22 farenheit...
