Has anyone ever heard of spraying vinegar on weeds and grass to kill it? I tilled up a little spot and planted some blackberry plants and know there will be some bermuda grass coming up in different spots, even though we tried to rake it all out. I definitely don't want to use Round Up and heard this was a good alternative.

...and on a happy note, my husband make my boxes yesterday! Yay! I can hardly wait to fill them. Now, if it will hurry up and get warm enough to plant them... Very Happy

Thanks,

Vinegar is an acid. I have successfully (sort of) used agricultural vinegar (25% acidity) on poisonous vines. While it killed the vines temporarily, they did grow back. Much too expensive stuff to be used. It's been suggested to me that I try household vinegar (5% acidity) on my driveway weeds. It's much cheaper by far, and infinitely less toxic than petrochemical based herbicides.

But here's the thing. How do you not injure other plants you want to keep if you use any herbicide? I think it's much better just to pull the weeds out of the box.

Boiling water works pretty good too, for grass and weeds and ant hills. Not so good directly near any fruit/ vegetables growing.. Shocked I agree with Tom, hand weeding/cultivating will be required if you want to remain organic.

Thanks everyone! I will definitely be pulling weeds in the SFG, but I won't have any, right? :-) This was for my little patch of blackberry plants. I went to Lowe's today and got some weed barrier, so hopefully, it won't be a problem.

I used household vinegar on the dandelions and thistles in my lawn last spring. I sprayed, waited for a few days, then sprayed again. It was really easy to see where I had sprayed the first time because it really did make them shrivel! Lawn grass is really forgiving, it will fill right in quickly. I had the fewest dandelions in my lawn ever that spring and summer. To make a more directed spray, you can cut the bottom off a soda bottle (1- or 2-liter) stick the nozzle of your spray bottle into it throught the little neck, then slide the bottomless bottle over the weed you want to spray before hitting the trigger. It keeps as much vinegar directed at your weed and prevents overspray.

Just a thought, dandelions will bring the bees. Wink

They can have the dandelions I leave throughout the back yard by the boxes. The front lawn gets irises and zinnias. NO DANDYS! flower

I used gallons of vinegar last year on weeds. Yes, it works until the next rain. In path areas I used water softener salt, covered with cardboard and then mulch. That also helped keep weeds down in some of the particularly tough areas.

tomperrin is correct, a very useful weedkiller is 25% Vinegar, the household vinegar is too weak to do any permanent damage to weeds. I've pretty much given up the fight on dandelions, now, instead of killing them, I harvest them. Some people pay BIG bucks for dandelion juice. The leaves are bitter, kinda like arugula, but they are extremely rich in vitamins and minerals.

I must tell you that you should not harvest dandelions as a food source if you have used chemical lawn fertilizer to treat your lawn. Most have some type of weed killer in the mix and you would not want to ingest that.

As for weeds in the SFG box, it will happen after the 2nd or 3rd year. Keep pulling them early and you will find that the weeds will be few if not non-existent but still the threat remains. My fix for that is to throw my Mel's mix into my compost and let it recover. Once the soil is baked and the nutrients are regenerated, I create a new 4x4 box and throw my new mix back in. This will be my 1st year trying that.
