Post  matthew2000tx 3/4/2012, 8:30 am

Just wanted to introduce myself:

Hello from San Antonio, Texas (Helotes Texas area). My wife and I did the hanging tomatoes last year and a small herb garden in pots.
The hanging method didn't work so well in the Texas heat... too much water so little tomatoes. This year we want to try the SFG method. I check out Mel's new book at the local library and Have read it. I'm planning on constructing the beds sometime next week.

One question I have is where can I find good info on cheap, effective irrigation for the SFG beds. Any pointers would be appreciated.

I'll try to post some pictures of my garden once the beds are made.

Hi and welcome from Canyon Lake...

This is my first year for gardening, so can't be much help with the irrigation thing. We are going to rig something up, and just hand water until then.

My husband is pretty ingenious, so I'm sure he'll come up with something, and I'll try to share it with you if it works out.

I'm in Spring Branch/ Bulverde area, this will be our first year to garden as well.

Have you guys found a good place to purchase Peat moss or where to get compost?

Thanks!

glad you\'re here Matthew2000tx and Rettele! Smile

Matthew - there are several good threads on irrigation for SFG. Some people use self watering types of containers, others use soaker type hoses, while still others use a system of hoses with little direct outlets on each individual square foot. I believe the SFG store sells irrigation systems as well. If you type "irrigation" in the white search box in the upper left of the forum page, you should get some good results for threads on irrigation. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics to share because in my climate, I still use a good old watering can on my beds. Smile

Great to hear you were able to get the ANSFG book at the library and check it out!

Rettele - Peat Moss is usually found in my area at almost every big box store this time of year and even some grocery stores. I know you are in a different climate than I am, so hopefully some Texans will chime in. Smile Remember when you buy your peat that you will fluff it to probably twice it's volume before you use it in your mix, so if you buy a 3 cu ft bale, it will fluff to 6 cu ft of peat moss. Smile As for compost, that is a little harder but there have been many good suggestions...everything from the bagged compost available at big box stores to local stables, farmers, craigslist, freecycle, etc... Smile

Again, welcome! Smile
