I have an area out front where there is lots of built up mulch. I was pulling and cutting some tree root and came across this. should I be worried I think they are termites. I have never seen termites before please help

Those are indeed termites. Termites are found almost everywhere, all the time. They don't cause much trouble unless they get inside your home. They are useful in that they dispose of old fallen trees and such. If you check around and turn over any old logs or fallen trees on your property you will probably find them tunneling away.
