Where to get compost? Empty Where to get compost?

Post  minniemom 4/3/2010, 9:04 am

We are just starting out this year with our first SFG (first garden of any kind actually!) and we haven't started to compost yet. I do plan to in the future, but for just starting out where can I get compost? My husband bought some organic potting soil at Home Depot because that's all he could find. Will that work?

We did get some free compost from our local landfill, but it is all leaves and my understanding is that we should use that as a replacement for the peat moss, not as actual compost? Is that true?

By the way, I am in PA if that makes any difference for suggestions on where/how to get compost.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Minniemom, welcome to the fourms.

Try calling around to the different nurseries in the area to see what kinds of compost they have. Local stables & farms might have something too. As for the compost from the dump, I counted it as compost in my garden.

I'm in NJ and I haven't really found ANY decent compost at the big box stores (HD, Lowes). You need to call around some local nurseries and garden centers and ask. I have found a local garden center that is attached to an ACE hardware and that carries several different types of bagged, i can manage to get mushroom, composted manure, a good general mix and they used to carry shellfish compost but they arent getting it this year.

If you are near Philly and you get really stuck, you could come over the bridge to my place but I'm sure there are places closer to you, it just takes some calls. When i first got started last year I call alot of places before I found the right spots, and even so I have to go to two different places to get my compost and my vermiculite.

We searched 3 places and found a munure/humus compost at the big box stores(Lowes/Home Depot) and found 5 different types of compost at a garden center. The gerden center we got it from is associated with Southern States. You may have one in your area as well. I was also going to try a Tractor Supply but we found it before we went that far.

Definitely call before you go!!!! I found Mushroom Compost and Manure/Humus at Home Depot. Then I found a locally made compost at a local garden center. All the garden centers in my area carry only that 1 type. So I'm going with 3 different ones and hoping for the best!!!

In my quest for compost, I learned that PA is the mushroom growing capital of the USA. I located several places that sold mushroom compost in central PA but didn't save the info because they were a bit far for me. I'm sure i just Googled mushroom compost to locate the sites. Hope this helps, good luck!
