Seedling roots penetrating peat pots

I started some herbs and a couple of cabbages indoors under fluorescent lights and on a black mat that soaks up water from below. The plants are doing 'OK', but there are roots growing through the peat pots and onto the black mat. What should I do about this? If I do nothing, the plants will eventually adhere to the black mat.

You could put them in bigger pots.

Yep, once the roots on your little seedlings outgrow their pots, if it's still to early to plant outside then you'll have to pot up.
