Hi Tuxdad and Welcome to the SFG Forum. Questions are good. There is a handy search feature that is above the Latest Topics list and it will search through old threads. If you cannot find anything on what you have questions, give a shout out! Very Happy

Hailing from south central, not far from Harrisburg...

I've had a garden the past few yrs but this'll be the first time trying SFG .. I plan on doing a part of my garden this way, since I'm not sure if re-doing an 8'x8' too steep of a learning curve for the first time out..Laughing

Howdy from PA !! Empty too steep?

Post  curio on 2/26/2012, 9:48 am

I'm converting all of our raised beds to SFG this year. Two that are 4x5', one that is 4x10', one at 2x8' and the last at 2x10'. Other than digging out all the existing soil (which is mostly amended compost) and replacing it with Mels Mix, and adding the dividers, I think it will make life a lot easier.
Welcome... I've learned a LOT in the past week I've been on the board.

curio......If your beds are deeper than 6" then you only need to add 6" of MM to the top. Those are the critical areas.

I would put a layer of weed cloth between the existing soil & the MM.

Howdy from PA !! Empty MM on top

Post  curio on 2/26/2012, 6:43 pm

We dug out the beds down to the 6" mark (the depth of the beds) and two are now filled with MM. We hadn't had an issue with weeds in the previous beds after nearly 15 years of pulling them like crazy, so I didn't put any weed block down. I may with the really large bed that's left, though, as it's the one closest to the raspberry bed.

BTW, Carlisle Country Living sells HUGE bags of vermiculite pretty cheap, as far as vermiculite goes.

Be careful though, as the bags look exactly the same as perlite, just has a checkmark to indicate which it is. Hubby bought me perlite by mistake once. Took several years to use that up in potting soil.

I'd recommend a 4x4 bed if you can fit it. Besides herbs, a bunch of various lettuces are also very convenient to have right next to your kitchen.

Also... there's a farm on Rt 11, if heading towards Carlisle, it's on the left, just before Burnthouse Rd. Sells straw pretty cheap and will arrange delivery if you need.

You guys out in Western PA are fortunate to have J.P. Austin nearby.

EDITED: I forgot to tell you that Victoria from the SFG Foundation has met with him and I use them for my vermiculite. The owner, Jerry, seems to be running a VERY reputable business. I had a problem with something and he was more than fair in his compensation for my trouble.

Thanks for the JP Austin site. I have been looking in all the wrong places; but I did find some vermiculite at my local Agway but it was medium grade.

I noticed they have several different sizes so which on is best for SFG' coarse or extra coarse?

Mel recommends coarse and I use coarse or extra coarse in my business.
