Re: Toy Box 3 (the charm)
I am back at school. I miss working from home with the distance learners but I have an awesome Jr-high class this year. Who knew you could get so tired sitting at a desk? The Toy Box, the puppies and the kitchen are SO neglected but still giving.
Re: Toy Box 3 (the charm)
How could you not have fun in the Toy Box!! Now with a green house woohoo
I've been missing you around here lately LD and so glad to see the Toy Box doing so well. I love all the variety of your garden and of course always love seeing the dogs too.
What were those tomatoes? Oxfords? I might have to see if I can track some down Will you be putting any of your seeds up in the new seed exchange area?
The fruit trees, the little pumpkins, all of it just looks to cool. Thanks so much for dropping in and sharing.
I hope you have a great school year

Maybe you mean Ox Heart? a.k.a Cuore di Bue (which, shockingly, is Italian for Ox Heart.)RoOsTeR wrote: snip....What were those tomatoes? Oxfords? I might have to see if I can track some down ....
thanks for missing me, I'd be here if they would add just an hour or two to my day.

Re: Toy Box 3 (the charm)
It is a short season bi color corn called F1 Sugar Dots. It has been 20+ years since I last grew corn. Sugar Dots was the corn we grew in our mountain valley so I had hopes that it would ripen in this maritime chill town. The ears are not all as nice as that one in the video....actually they are all nice to eat but some of them are "lunch box size" (and I make bento, so a few are tiny but still sweet and yummy.)southern gardener wrote:snip ... We just cut down and harvested the sweet corn. What’s left is flint corn that I was curious about.
A few cipollini onions, a bucket of corn (I best get busy with them) and the garbanzo beans.... the flint corn is an early example of Painted Mountain.

Re: Toy Box 3 (the charm)
I love seeing everyone's videos, it's very cool seeing what everyone is growing and getting ideas on how to set up my garden!
I love your Toy Box, Debs, I'd love to do that to my yard but I think the kids would protest if I took away their play area, so at the moment I'm limited to the back of the yard!

Thanks ericam, my "kids" are 33 and 35 so they drive away to play.ericam wrote:....snip....I'd love to do that to my yard but I think the kids would protest if I took away their play area....
What I thought would never happen has become my life. I am officially a weekend farmer. Ray and I spent this morning putzing about, harvesting this and that, cleaning up and getting ready for autumn. These are sweet Torpedo onions. They come in all sizes, something I adore about them, pick what I need, leave the rest. Now they are drying on a rack. They will not store a long time but long enough to give the leeks a little more time to sweeten up.
Do you remember the last time we were able to harvest orange pumpkins? Truth be told there is still a huge green pumpkin out by the apple tree, getting a little more sunshine before it has to be picked.
Speaking of apples, the last three branches of my little espaliered multi tree were harvested today. Nearly filled a Home Depo bucket. There were actually 4 branches but only about 4 or 5 Macintosh were left, I've been grabbing those for my lunch on school days.
An AMAZING harvest of Tomatoes for the cold PNW. Three Boxes of toms and 4 vines that are still growing (as well as buckets of determinants) Still getting sunny skies. It is not as hot as it was but if you stay in one place too long you get hot from radiant heat. 66/45, no chance of rain. Sunrise at 7:15 AM setting 11 hours and 21 minutes later at 6:36 PM
Re: Toy Box 3 (the charm)
congrats on a great harvest Debs!!
we have been missing you
are you in as much shock as we are over our fall weather?
love your pumpkins and apples :drunken: .....what are your plans for them? ....we are planning on planting some small fruit tree in our front yard in some wine barrels.....we dont know much about planting fruit trees as our plum tree in the back yard has been here since before we moved here some 17 years ago.....this year it gave us over 100 lbs of the best plums ever!.....the hit it took over the winter must have done it some much needed pruning......
any suggestions on what kind of fruit tree's we could plant?....we might even have one or two spots in the ground as well...we want them to stay small.....
thinking about a nut tree as well...not sure they stay small though....
hugs
rose.....who is enjoying the wonderful fall weather here in the PNW

Re: Toy Box 3 (the charm)
Re: fruit trees. If peaches can live in your area, that's a great choice. I planted one small whip last year and was amazed that this year I got over a dozen lovely fruit from it here in Zone 5a. A Red Haven is the type I planted. No other peach near it so it doesn't need any other for pollination. Its a dwarf like my others, but did better than my cherry and apples that have been planted longer.
My little Red Haven peach tree on 4/12/12 starting to blossom.
Same tree on 6/16/12.
The first 13 Red Havens and first Honey Crisp Apple harvested on 8/13/12.
If i were going to get two more fruit trees, one would be another Red Haven peach. I say two because I have to replace a dead Granny Smith apple next spring.

Re: Toy Box 3 (the charm)
So sorry about your granny! RIP
IF I grow peaches (dreaming in shades of fuzzy) I would have to put them in a container and I cannot afford any more containers. Partly because we are still not sure we will be able to keep this place but also because it is so wet in the PNW that peach leaf curl wipes out crops on this side of the Cascades. The container is to move them out of the weather in the rainy season. I know so many people who try every kind of tree that someone somewhere has said beats the curl only to get one or two fruit (if that). A short ride over the pass on a beautiful crisp fall weekend brings me into peach tree heaven. Ray still buys boxes of fruit during hunting season for me to put up.
Now that we have a greenhouse I would like another Meyer lemon tree (or three)
Debs......who doesn't stop wanting peaches.

I'm going to get A Red Haven peach, QB! If you can grow it in your area, I'm pretty sure I can. Thanks for the info.
