Composting not just your average yard weeds Empty Composting not just your average yard weeds

Post  Laurie Lou 2/17/2012, 7:06 pm

The lot next to my house is empty--of a home, that is, but it is filled with milkweeds and other heavy duty farm field varieties of weeds. My back yard has graciously invited any and all of the weed seeds over to sprout. This year my neighbor agreed to let me garden his lot in exchange for keeping the weed height in compliance with the HOA rules. Can I compost the cut weeds or would that be just an escalation of the current problem plus fill my raised beds with weed seeds, too? Should I remove the weeds at soil height or do I need to get all of the roots, too? What should I do in addition to removing the weeds before they go to seed?

Get several big tubs and fill them with the cut weeds . top up the tubs with water and cover the tub for a fortnight or so agitate the contesn every 5 day s with a garden fork & recover so that the weeds start to rot .

Use a fork to lift out the rotting weeds into the whel barow or buckets , drain off the tubs and put the weeds on your compost heap .

The fortnights soak in the dark will have caused the seeds to rot & become unviable .

If you can drive a mower over the weed areas one you have colected the inital cut weeds do so to stop them going to seed .otherwise dig out the prenial pernicious weeds and do the tub thing to them as well
