Built my first SFG box this past weekend (a 2 x 12) and I transplanted 9 tomato plants into it yesterday. Using an improvised row cover made of semi-circular fencing with clear plastic over top to make a "greenhouse" in case we get any more cold nights North Central Florida Nights like last weeks surprise cold wave.

First SFG Box 396615 to the Forums, First SFG Box 61949 Bill.

Dare I ask if you have used the Mel's Mix recipe and have you read Mels' book?

We look forward to your progress. I still have two feet of snow on my beds and compost pile, but then, I am in the Great White North, but so looking forward to spring.

Really glad to have you join us. I am so jealous of you starting tomatoes outside. Our last frost date is mid-April, but we are lucky if we can get any warm weather plants outside before mid May or even June because the soil takes forever to warm up to 60 degrees. We have little heat here in the summer, but very mild winters with few frosts and next to no hard freezes.

I have family along the Gulf Coast, near Largo and they suffer from (but still love) the high heat and humidity all summer. My sister had her parka and muffler out when ya'll got your recent cold-wave.

Sounds like you are on the ball with your hoop and cover.

Keep us posted on your progress.

First SFG Box Empty whoops wrong forum area

Post  BillOcala 2/15/2012, 10:18 pm

Well heck somehow I ended up in the wrong forum area...whoops. Anyway - Here in the middle of the state, Ocala seems to run anywhere from 5 to even 10 degrees cooler than the coasts or even say Orlando, so the summer looses a bit of it's bite here (plus I have some advantagous late after noon shade from an almost 200 year old oak tree to the west.) It also runs colder this time of year too - so I have to be really carefull! (hence the little convertable greenhouse covers - which also keep out the racoons, possums, etc not to mention the random dog or cat. I have another 2 weekends or so of building before I am done builiding beds. I will then maybe be ready for some pictures. As for filling the rows up my plans are up in the air for over half of it... except for wanting to grow about 100 corn plants and I want to do a 12 x2 of some strawberries. I give a lot of food away...I just like having pretty stuff growing Smile

Me too, and a lot of variety. I had six boxes last spring and adding 4 this spring. Just for me.
