sweet potatoes

I want to plant some sweet potatoes this year. I have never had sweet potatoes in my SFG , so I'm wondering if the 6" deep soil will be deep enough? or should I make a deeper bed? Also, I want to start my own slips, which I have never done. Any help on raising sweet taters would be helpful.

I tried sweet potatoes in tubs/trashcans last year and it didn't go so well for me. Will try it in the bed this year with a covering of compost, which will work right into my MM. Don't just think of them as a root crop; the leaves are edible, too. Let them pull double duty for you!

I prob. have 10 lb. out of 50 left from Last yr. I planted late, and thought it was to hot to plant, but it was really the right time.

Also, when your slips get to the length you want, just break from potatoe, and plant. Don't wait for the roots to grow on the slip, it will root in the ground. Do not put in a pot to grow the roots longer, sw. potatoes do not like to be transplanted.

I have my beds 12 in. Most of the sw potatoes were very near the surface, so Maybe 6 in. would be enough, don't know for sure.

This website sells slips, but they have a very informative page on growing sw pot. even in cool parts of the country.

Thanks for posting this. They have a a lot of info and a very large selection and they ship slips to California.

I have some slips ordered from them. I think they are very good and are organic. It is really something when they can ship 'into' California. A lot of catalogs say'cannot ship to Ca.'
