Question: 3.5x3.5 bed

Hi everyone! This will be my second year having a vegetable garden in my backyard, and my first year having a plan! Laughing

I'm in the planning phase now and have a question for you all. I currently have two 3.5x3.5 beds that I purchased last year at Sam's, and I'm wondering how best to adapt this to the square foot method. Do I ignore the extra 6 inches on two sides and operate using a 3x3 model, or are there plants that I can grow in a "half square" if you will?

This might be addressed in the book, so I apologize if it is. I just started reading it after I found it in my grandmother's book collection the other day (copyright 1981!). I really appreciate your help!

Lots of things can go in 1/2 squares. I have radishs and lettuce sharing a square and then in a few weeks I'll plant another just like it. Anything that is more than 1 per square can be used in the half square, just half as much.

Get a copy of the latest book and check out how much easier it is now.

wilkette,

a single six inch by twelve inch (half) square could take

4 or 5 bush bean plants

8 radishes

8 carrots

4 or 5 beets

8 onion

4 or 5 spinach

2 swiss chard (or if you pick the leaves frequently and keep the plants small 4)

2 marigolds

Like Goosegirl and Walshevak recommended, as much as I loved the old book, because there is a lot of information there, get the ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING book published in 2006. No double digging, Question: 3.5x3.5 bed 43549

almost no weeds, life is much easier this way.

Cayla..make sure you get the full copy NOT THE CONDENSED VERSION. There is a cheaper version that is being sold through Dollar General. It misses some important chapters, is in black and white. Just not as good as the full version.

If you have to wait for a copy of Mel's latest book (2006), then your local library may have a copy you can borrow until you get your own copy.
