staff74 question
When is the earliest you have planted Broccoli seeds under plastic and it work?
I am thinking about trying it after next week's cold dip.
Thank You,
Rod

Re: staff74 question
I must admit Rod and I hate to disappoint you but I am a cheat when it comes to Spring Broccoli. Its not that I don't go from seed because in the fall I do but in the spring, I just wait for my local farmers exchange to put out their selection and I transplant. They start growing from seed in January in their own hoop houses and I buy a 6 pack tray for $2.25 around the last week in Feb. Those plants are hardy enough to tolerate the few remaining frosts we get.
I'm sorry I can't help you but if I was growing straight from seed, I would just do my best to cover them up at night. However, getting them to germinate right now directly outside might take time unless they are under a cover all day which raises temps consistently in the upper 60's at least.
I would go for it though next week !! Why not eh?

Re: staff74 question
Staff - I found plants- locally - Bonnie Plants- Brocclli and cabbage. $3.69 for 9 plants. I am going to try them under plastic this week or next week. Going to sow some also . We will see.
Thanks Staff- lots of help.

Re: staff74 question
Sure thing Rod. I think after this weekend I will look to do the same. Low 20's for nights might be too cold for a new transplant but after that we get mild again.

Re: staff74 question
Hi Rod. I did the same thing - found local broccoli and cauli (at the Farmer's Exchange - thanks staf), and am keeping them in my laundry room until after the cold snap predicted this weekend. Best of luck with it!

Re: staff74 question
Well- the young lettuce, Kale, Spinach and carrotts made it past 2 nights ago. They were under plastic- it was cold. The above was sown by seed outside. The plastic warmed the soil enough to do it. Will definetly have to put some hoops in. This was without hoops. This was no hoops and no heat , except the sun.
That wind was super cold Saturday night on you guys also. All survive ok?
Think I will do the cabbage and broccoli plants Wednesday.
