Cedar Boxes

I put together a couple of cedar boxes this evening. In the photo are two boxes. The one on the bottom is made from cheap cedar pickets ($2.35 ea. 6' long) from Lowes. I cut 2' off each dog-eared end and double stacked for a taller box (around 11" ht.). I used eight pickets ($18.80) and have 2' sections left over for a small, tall box.

The box on top is made from a more expensive piece of cedar (around $16-$18) 1x6x16 cut into four equal lengths, single height.

Landarch, how did you nail the corners and attach the pieces inside to hold the layers together. I want to do this.. !! cant wait, my 3 yr old boxes are rotting.. I knew this would happen and have wondered what to do Smile

this is the least expensive I think at this moment in time. My existing boxes I have had to stake up on a few of them, still usable but the new ones will be made out of this I think. Going to check the prices at the places in town this week Smile

When Al and I made all the garden boxes for the Apollo Garden we used corner brackets inside the boxes, placed over the seams of the two layers.

We're into our second year and have no boards coming apart or any "bulging" happening. These brackets are less than a dollar each and we put one inside each corner. WE used one flat bracket midway along the 8' sides, across the seams to prevent any bulging there too...just an added security!

I, a woodwork challenged person, also used corner brackets after doing several boxes by just screwing the wood pieces together directly. WOW! It was SOOOOOOO much easier to do it that way. It made all of the difference.

I'm no woodworking challenged, but it's tough to do when you're lugging an oxygen tank on your shoulder.

This will be a great tip to share with my handy dandy neighbor who will build my boxes for me.

We still put screws in the ends to hold the two boards together, then we added the brackets inside because those screws, no mattter how long they are, still like to eventually back themselves out when the dirt inside gets wet and heavy!

There are actually two separate boxes...see the new pic below. I used some decking screws I had on hand...they were 2" long so I needed an large piece of wood on the inside corner...screwed from the outside in. If I had shorter screws on hand I would have purchased some cheap metal brackets and screwed form the inside out..

I end-screwed the small box...I think I will use corner metal brackets on these before setting outside to strengthen the connection (putting a larger piece of wood in the corner takes up a little bit of space in each corner square)

I am basically experimenting to see what works best vs. cost for this year.

I was looking at the bottom one and didnt clarify. Thank you for doing that, it really helped. I was looking at the pieces of wood attached in the corners and in the middle of the boxes, I take it those are 4 inch high? attached to be 8?

I hope I'm not confusing the issue here by inserting my images too...but Ha-v-v, if you're talking about the boxes Al and I built for the Apollo Garden, we used 2" x 8" x 4', stacked two high for a 16" (almost!) side. We have seniors here in our park and wanted high sides so we don't have to lean down as far!! Wink

The pickets I bought were just under 6" wide...so when you stack for a box the total depth is just under 12" total...so the wood pieces in the middle are just under 12" ht.

I put the supports on the inside because I plan to have lawn between my boxes...the exact width of my mower...and I don't want the mower wheels to hit anything on the outside of the boxes.
