Ground cherry seeds, paying it forward
Last year Glendale-gardener was kind enough to give me one of her ground cherry seedlings and it made me so happy to find someone so willing to share. I thought I'd pay it forward this year by offering to share seeds I saved from the plant she gave me. If anyone is interested in growing their own this year, send me a self addressed stamped envelope and I'd be happy to share! PM me and I'll let you know where to send your envelope.
Hope this makes someone's day like she made my day last year!
I have lots of seeds, but I'll make sure to edit or remove this post when I run out.

Any tips on growing these? Or any good recipes to share? I don't know much about these plants, but they sound exciting
Re: Ground cherry seeds, paying it forward
Here are a few links that helped me out when I was growing them last year. They pretty much grew themselves, easy and prolific.

Re: Ground cherry seeds, paying it forward
Ok, I have never heard of these but now I see that I "need" to grow them!
Lucky for me, I just happen to have a couple of squares left that need a resident. How many did you plant per square?

Re: Ground cherry seeds, paying it forward
It sounds like a lot of people on the internet recommend planting in containers if you don't want a bunch of volunteers and its's easier to find the fruit
Re: Ground cherry seeds, paying it forward
Last year I grew mine in pots about 5 gallon size or maybe a bit smaller. This year I'm giving them their own small bed (about 2.5x2.5). They do sprawl out a bit so if you're going to put them in your sfg be ready to corral them somehow, with some stakes or a cage might work
You could probably grow one per square if it's on the corner and you're willing to put up a fight lol.

I'm having a really good time looking for fruits that can be grown as annuals, it's just something a little different for the sfg. If anyone has suggestions for interesting new varieties, let me know

Re: Ground cherry seeds, paying it forward
Lucky for me I also have a few large containers and some extra Mel's Mix. I'm still trying to kill the mint in my backyard that our previous owners planted. I don't need any more "volunteers" in my yard. Thanks for the tip. I guess I'll have to plant something else in my orphan squares. I'm sure I can find something...

Lisa, that is a really good idea to use containers. The fruit fall off when they are ripe, and you do NOT want to eat them before they are ripe.

Re: Ground cherry seeds, paying it forward
Are there any other fruits like this that can be grown in the SFG? I have three fruit trees, blueberry bushes, a grapevine and strawberries planted elsewhere (which we probably won't get much out of for a year or two). I'd love to plant some other fruits like this that can go in my squares.

Re: Ground cherry seeds, paying it forward
I'm glad your seedling did well Diana, I wondered about that last year!
I grew mine in large self watering pots on my patio and they did pretty well. Not a ton came in the house though. My boys mostly just ate them outside.
You could try wonderberries- I thought about trying them but they say that they are toxic until they are ripe so I worried about my boys eating them and getting sick. Apparently, they are a good pie berry though.
There is also honeyberries- I haven't tried them (and they're not an annual) but I keep seeing them in the catalogs and I am intriqued because they grow in shady spots and that would be great because I'm running out of sunny spots!

Re: Ground cherry seeds, paying it forward
GG- the ground cherries did really well! I remember that it was a leggy seedling, but I kept him staked and he thickened up pretty well and gave us lots of berries. I still appreciate your kind gesture
I ordered wonderberry seeds from Baker Creek this year, so we'll see how it goes, I'll let you know how they are! I'm also trying litchi tomatoes, giant cape gooseberries, as well as strawberries and blueberries that I already have
I love having some fruits growing in addition to my veggies.

Re: Ground cherry seeds, paying it forward
when saving seeds, do I need to worry about cross pollination? Also, I do plan on planting these in containers. Those that have grown these before, what size container do you think I would need?
Re: Ground cherry seeds, paying it forward
Emiller, I do have some seeds left but I'm on vacation. I'll PM you my address and if you send me a SASE I'll drop them in the mail when I get home on the 10th.
