Mites! ...yet another pest to deal with

I contacted my local ag extension agent to find out what is taking out my tomatoes. I thought it might be blight or even gray mold but the fungicide I've been using for 2 weeks has had no effect. I got the following response:

"We are experiencing a tomato problem due to a mite. The leaves not only turn brown but are curling. The first assumption was that it was herbicide spraying around the area that traveled, but that was not the case.

The solution for mites is pretty easily controlled with various miticides (mites are not insects so an insecticide will not work).

Organic options like Ecotec (peppermint oil and rosemary oil) are available. Any product containing abamectin, chlorfenapyr, or sulfur are good control options.

Sprayable sulfur will be the best for a homeowner, but it should not be applied if temperatures are 90F or higher."

So it looks like I may have mites... great, just freakin' great. Sad

At least you KNOW...and you might just get it cleared up in time for *something* to recover to give you some payback.

And I'll bet you recognize it in a flash next time!

(If you really want, I'll send you some of my Frat Boy(TM) slugs and you can party down with them!)

I agree...once you know who/what the enemy is, you can devise a plan of attack. From the sounds of the info from the extension office, your are not alone, sounds like an area wide problem.

WE have always had mites and aphids here in Alabama. They(mites) leave little white speaks all over the leaves starting from the bottom and heading up. I have always been told you can only control them, not eradicate. Therefore, I always start with insecticidal soap at the start of the season to get them under control and spray every week. Aphids usually come in the spring and suck the life out of the new growth.......
