SFG Virgin in Wisconsin Empty SFG Virgin in Wisconsin

I am so excited to have found SFG. I have wanted a garden for many years, but there was no way I could handle the heavy clay in this area. SFG is the solution to all my problems! I can not wait to start mixing ingredients. Just got coarse vermiculite today and it feels like Christmas morning to me. I am still deciding if I should purchase two 4x4 vinyl boxes or one 4x8 step up vinyl box. I really like the look of the vinyl. Does anyone have experience with the vinyl boxes? Can't wait to get started! Even though it snowed here today.

Hello and welcome to the forums the only exp i have with vinyl in my area is that it doesnt last lng down here the sun and intense heat of florida makes it brittle and faded in about 2 or 3 years but up in your area you shouldnt have much of an issue with it jusat make sure its a UV resistant vinyl and it should last for years to come good luck with your garden and keep us posted on how things are going for you

p.s. we love pictures (even silly and goofy ones)

Welcome King of the Vikings: I hope you are nice and warm up there in the north country. Today I think we broke 70 degrees for the first time this year. As soon as the soil temps get a little higher the squash, tomatoes, and other warm season seeds can go into the ground. When is your last frost date? God Bless, Ward.

This is getting more difficult. The weather man is telling us to not plant until after Mother's Day. Can not wait to get started.

SFG Virgin in Wisconsin Empty Don't be TOO Anxious

Post  capsounddad 4/9/2010, 9:29 pm

RNmom7,

I have lived in Wisconsin for all but one year of my life. To quote Garrison Keilor "March and April are the months that the good Lord invented to show people that don't drink, what a hangover is like." In my experience, waiting until after May 1, while no guarantee (remember May 8 '85?) is worth it. If you are dead set on starting now, make sure you are able to cover any plants at night if need be. I heard it was 14 degrees in Hayward (far north) last night. Better to have healthy plants in your garden a little later than having to replant everything a couple of weeks after a late frost.

Welcome. Wisconsin is a lovely state -- I've spent many times there at the DeKoven Center in Racine. A bit chilly for this Texan, but lovely growing weather in the summer. Have fun and jump in here often.
