Of course I sure do admire that red can that Jazzy posted
It came with the bokashi buckets. Pretty good deal on all three buckets and the bokashi bran. I can't believe I waited so long to start doing something like this!

llama momma wrote:Today I found a little ceramic kitchen compost bucket, it holds 3 qts. Found it at World Market @ $14.99. It's the first time I've seen one in a store instead of mail order. Made my day when right next to it was a package of replacement charcoal filters for the lid too. It's a good day.
I got one like yours too. Except once, I put some lentils in it that I used for weighing down a pie crust. I put the lentils in the pail and they Stuck to the sides of the container. Ewwww, what a mess. I bought some lunch sized paper bags and tear the top a little bit and now I just throw the whole thing in the compost pile. Its good to be composting

Ewee. I still have that one from over a year ago, it washes out so easily. Sometimes I line it with a plastic supermarket bag to avoid similar issues like you described.

composter
Bought this one (Very expensive), and the better half hates it! So it sits empty and in the dark in the pantry, carbon filter and all. Compost goes in a smelly plastic cup by the sink until it goes down the G/D...

Re: Show us your kitchen compost container
why does he/she hate it?? We have the exact same one, and we love it, use it multiple times per day. NEVER smells, easy to clean. People don't even really notice it. We keep it on the counter behind the faucet so it's easy to get to.aerodyne wrote:Bought this one (Very expensive), and the better half hates it! I tried to place in same location to no avail. Logic is not an option to "She that must be obeyed"
I did try to bring it up again this PM, no joy. Back to the pantry!

I Am Cheap, Cheap, Cheap
Buying pretty containers is nice, but recycling and thriftiness win in my opinion. I love the stacking coffee containers w/lid the best.
I have a cheap one made from a milk jug. A cellphone photo failed to send, so here goes my description. I use a single empty 1-gallon plastic milk container, with the lid attached. A single 3-sided cut is made in the side to make a panel access, so filling and emptying the jug requires peeling back the panel. The panel is only cut on 3 sides, so it retains intact appearance. Pushing the panel in or pulling it out will open the jug for access/dumping. Laying the jug on it's side allows 95 percent filling with liquid, but when full the liquid can spill while transporting.
This next one is not my idea, but I like it. Apartment Therapy idea uses two 1-gallon milk containers.

Mine was a gift!! It's easy on the eyes, and you don't see the "icky" stuff that I think sometimes people associate with compost pails. The milk jugs look like a good idea tho!!

Re: Show us your kitchen compost container
Aerodyne, Gosh, I would give it a loving home if we lived closer! I AM the "she who must be obeyed." While building two compost piles, all the kitchen produce scraps were saved in the frig and then the freezer while gathering materials for the piles. Now they just get trashed. Sniff.
Batmap, thanks for sharing the link. Clever re-purpose.

Compost Pail in the kitchen
Just checking to see what type of pail everyone uses in their kitchen to collect their scraps?
I am finding that if I don't dump them daily, I get fruit flies !!!!
I am using an old ice cream pail ( 1 gal ) and place a dish plate on the top.

I drink instant coffee or I would try the Folger can.
This was on display at the Heirloom Exposition. About the size of an Oxyclean bucket. Hummm

Aerodyne have you tried putting it under the kitchen sink. Then it would be out of sight but quickly usable.
