I also use solo cups to up pot from soil blockers. Cheap Solo cups are from the dollar store. Sometimes the plants and soil slide out easy then I re use the cup after washing. If the cup is damaged then I don't mind throwing it out either.

Re: Seed Starting!!
My quick 2 cents. I bought 2" x 3 1/4" green seedling pots when I first started. They are durable and will be going on their 3rd use in a couple of weeks. I just wash them with dish soap and rinse thoroughly and air dry. Also used cheap yogurt cups. For up-potting tomatoes, I use 44 plastic soda cups cut down to about 6". Wash everything for storage in my sfg storage cupboard. For common flowers I use pony packs, washed and stored, also. they are flimsy and break easily so I don't mind tossing when damaged because they were "free" with my purchased pony pack flowers.

Of course I can't wait since this is the first time I am trying to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers from seed.
I am in 6A too and I don't start mine till the end of March. 2 year's ago we had 2 frosts in late May. When is your last frost date?

Re: Seed Starting!!
Floyd,
My zone has changed to 7A last year.
I just tried to change it on my profile but was unable to do so.
That is why I can start Feb 19th.
Good luck!

we have been starting seeds
all winter. Most work well for us. We are having a bit of dry weather so have to be sure to water them. Lost some due to not watering enough.

Re: Seed Starting!!
I really believe we are actually as I posted between 6A and 7A.
I find sometimes that I can plant a week or two sooner. I have always planted a week or two sooner anyway!
My one son lives in Washington, DC and I believe they are also in Zone 7A which is strange since they do have a warmer spring and summer.
I don't mind change.

Re: Seed Starting!!
I have asked Santa for some potting soil and more trellis mesh. Hope he comes through as I need them both. Then I need to start my garden plans before picking my seeds.

Anyone have any experience with homemade newspaper cups? I am tempted to try them.

Re: Seed Starting!!
If you wanted to search our lovely sfg site, I do recall somewhere, somebody, was complaining the newspaper really didn't work very well, it got too soft and fell apart. Hopefully someone with actual experience will contribute soon. Also recall Belinda from the foundation making little paper pots with a wooden form, maybe 2-3 years ago? My experience is with the soil blocker set up. I like it.

I had troubles with the small newspaper pots and only used them one year. I would probably only do it again if I had nothing else to plant in.Scorpio Rising wrote:Found it! I think I am going to give it a try!

Did they fall apart, camp? I have a few 4 or 6 inch peat pots, but not many.

This is my 1st time using the newspaper pots and I really like them. I haven't had any issues with them falling apart but I don't use them for starting my seeds. I start my seeds in an aerogarden and then transplant into the pots.

Re: Seed Starting!!
I use used MM to start my seeds in. I fill the cell packs, stick in the seeds, water and then spritz with hydrogen peroxide and water mix to kill any fungus. Last year I used 1 inch cells to plant my seeds in.
This year I'll be using this nifty starter kit that my neighbor found at the dump.
After the seeds are planted the cell packs are covered and go on to a drugstore heating pad until they sprout. Then the cold crop seedlings go into the box bay window which faces southeast, uncovered.
