If cat pee would prevent disease in tomatoes, I'd have had the healthiest tomato plants in the world for the past 14 years or so! But then, who'd want to eat the tomatoes? Keeping cats out of the SFG - Page 2 Fresse

And yes, Megan, James Tiberius is named after that great cowboy-of-the-galaxy character. He was a singleton abandoned kitten, and we bottle-fed him from about 3 days old. He was strong and healthy, demanding of food and affection, and determined to explore his environment -- truly an "Enterprising" kitten . . .

Aw, what a sweet story about James Tiberius the kitten!

My cats don't go near the SFGs I have. It's just the next door cat. I am going to try the forks. Many of my tomato plants are in plastic bushels or planters that are at least two feet off the ground. That cat would have to jump from the ground INTO the actual plant to do anything to those.

I think I may have to enlist the hubby's help in "plugging" the holes in our fence where the next door cat squeezes through as well.

We had trouble with cats coming into our back yard a while back. Hubby put a live-capture trap (closed) out there and we are almost never troubled anymore.

Maybe sprinkle cayenne pepper over the SFG. Works for squirrels. Doesn't hurt the plants.

Keeping cats out of the SFG - Page 2 Empty War

Post  AndreaHall 3/9/2011, 10:31 am

Is anyone else fighting the good fight against cats in the garden this spring? I have two outdoor cats who were so very excited that I made them a bunch of giant catboxes, and now I'm doing everything I can to keep them from snapping off seedlings and digging up my garden.

My planter boxes went from beautiful, to warzone complete with plastic fork landmines and unused tomato cages laid down around the seedlings. I plan to raid the grapefruit tree today and throw more peels around too, but that doesn't seem to do much.

I need more forks.

here's my suggestion..but a motion activated sprinkler...
http://www.neighborhoodcats.org/HOW_TO_KEEPING_CATS_OUT_OF_GARDENS_AND_YARDS
I activates when anything comes near...you can place it outside the garden so it doesn't hurt the garden.
It can also be used to keep the cats away from windows etc. Ive recommended it a few times for owners who have feline behavior issues when they see a cat outside the window...but still pretty much the same concept. BEt you get the cat wet once and it will stay away. 🐱

The motion-activated sprinkler is definitely on my want-list, but it's a bit on the expensive side. I suppose it is a one time purchase that would last for years, and I would certainly enjoy watching the cats get hosed... Smile

Andrea Hall,

Yes, you do need more forks! I typically use about 9 per square. You've left too much room for the felines to maneuver.

Some neighbors came by a while back and commented on my bumper crop .... of white forks!

I would definatly rather have a cat problem than Acara's friend there, but that's just me. On the bright side I'm guessing Acara doesn't have bunny problems either!

I have an outdoor kitty and so far so good I haven't seen her do ANYTHING in the boxes, and one of her nicknames is garden kitty cause I do see her around my garden area often (she likes to hideout under our steps that is right next to the garden. To be fair, I haven't put any plants in the boxes yet, but they are sitting there ready to go. I'll be ready to stock up on forks if things change.

No bunnies Very Happy

Andrea, The "sentinels" work well & are worth the money. I got a set when I was raising Koi in the backyard (I have every large predatory bird know to man, in the rookery island behind my house).

May not cost-justify for plants, but it certainly did for Koi.

However, I did lose more than one coffee mug walking out to view the pond/fish at 5:30am ...... those automatic sprinklers don't particularly care if your friend or foe ....so count on a couple of really cold morning showers, if you forget to approach from the sensor blind-side.

As far as the cats go ...... I have a half dozen local cats that come over at night to watch me garden, but I put down a white pepper line around my SFG's every 2 weeks & they stay clear of the boxes.

oh man - talk about a rude awakening!

(I'm referring to the stream of profanity that would erupt unnervingly close to the neighbor's bedroom window)
