Pg 96 ANSFG
coffee grounds: should be no more than 10% of compost.

Have a look at what the ideal nutrients are needed for your tomatoes and seek out stuff that gives those requirements when compostrd it won't be a true balanced compost as it would be slightly higher in the required elements.
I think Phosphorous is high on the agenda foor stem growth but do look it up my old brain is not what it used to be.
Getting taller plants is easier if you gradually remove lower leaves adjacent to new formed fruits and only allow a few fruits every so often along the stem that way most of the plants goodness goes into the stem & top end leaf production .

Dumb question......
is that by weight or volume?

Re: Too Many Nutritous Items?
smart question, my dumb answer is I dunno. Mel puts it under a caution list of Limited Amounts, "each item should be under 10 percent of total." Imho that would mean eyeball the compost and go for it.

Re: Too Many Nutritous Items?
I agree with Llama Momma - I think it would be volume, as it is unlikely that most composters would take the time to weigh each item before adding to composter! Weight would also change by water content - wet or dry coffee grounds, totally different weight but same volume!

Re: Too Many Nutritous Items?
I guess volume would make sense.
Whether it was by weight or volume, I think I'm safe regardless. My compost pile is really big and it weighs a heck of a lot.

Sg, I don't know? I had kinda wondered why he had been scarce recently myself.
It is still the holidays so he may be busy.
Great avatar by the way!

Re: Too Many Nutritous Items?
There's some great information online about Florida Weave tomato supports and pruning tomatoes. We got a great harvest using those two things combined, and it would have been even better if I'd kept pruning once it got hot outside. We also had a bad year for disease last year (I suspect it was a grafted tomato plant that I ordered that infected things, based on where it started) but I'm hoping to get a harvest this year.
Sadly I think my source for heirloom tomato seedlings is drying up, but I'm going to beg and plead and see if he'll start some for me even if he doesn't sell them this year. *fingers crossed*
