Does anyone know how many Napa (Chinese) cabbage I can plant per square? The book says to plant one cabbage per square foot. However, I was hoping that I could get 4 per square foot. Thanks.

I think the cabbage, physically, will take close to a foot to grow and make a head, but more importantly, there probably wouldn't be enough nutrients to grow more per square ft.

I'm pushing the limit by planting broc, cabbage, caulilower and head collards 1 per square, then planting onions, lettuce, carrots, radishes, beets all around the edge between the squares. This can be eaten/pulled as the heads are forming to give more room if needed.

You could always try it and pull and eat small heads to give room.

Thanks for the reply Jo. I was hoping that Napa cabbage would be more like a leaf lettuce in that I could plant 4/square. I'll experiment with some and see what happens. I like your idea about pulling them early and eat small heads.

Just read about Napa cabbage under the N & C Midwest: April 2017! thread. Any one use Baker Creek Chinese cabbage - Hilton seeds? If I remember correctly, this cabbage is not like other Asian greens with hairy stickers.

I'm growing Kaboko F1 napa cabbage from Johnny's seeds. Cabbage root maggots messed up my first year. A hot fall set back my second year attempt; one overwintered, but understandably bolted instead of heading. This is my third year, and I'll be trying both spring and fall. The outdoor sown seed hasn't germinated, and the indoor sown backup got waay too lanky while I was away for three and a half days.

What do you mean by Asian greens w/ hairy stickers? Like radish greens? If so, napa doesn't have those.
