Just about ready to start my first sfg and want to check opinions and experience of other desert gardeners.

If my profile doesn't say, I'm in zone 8a, the Mojave Desert. This is the first week of mid-high 80's weather after several weeks of low 100s. Nights are now down to mid 60's. We've no W... yet, cheers . In short this is one of our two exquisite weather periods of the year. However, we'll have at least a couple, if not several really hot spells prior to mid November, when what we call Winter sets in.

All comments and advice will be most welcome.

Welcome Kathy.

We are experiencing a similar cool down here in the Sonoran desert (finally). Here are a couple of links to planting schedules for the Sonoran desert in the Phoenix area. I assume these would give you approximately the same schedule for the Mojave desert. Either that or try Googling Mojave desert planting schedule or planting schedule for whatever county you are in and see what you come up with.

http://www.urbanfarm.org/Planting_Calendar.pdf I like this one best since it gives more detail on when to plant and when yo can expect to harvest.

Thanks so much for these suggestions.

I've just started looking at the Urban Farm site and it appears useful. Do you find that the site gives a broad base of information for both urban and more rural areas? Or is it truly an urban focused information source?

Will follow up on the googling shortly. I loved the idea of getting artichokes started across the winter months. Can see a third sfg 4x4 in my life and garden area.

My experience of the differences between our two locales is limited in terms of duration, but I suspect you have higher humidity, higher top temps, but do not know anything about winters. Much of this opinion comes from a book called Desert Gardening, which appears to focus on the Phoenix to Tucson corridor.

Have you found Dave's Garden site to be useful?

Although the Mojave certainly has its own distinct micro-climates, for veggies it is a pretty broad yes or no on planting. And where I am we just ended our 100s run too and it is 80 here and finally cooling off at night. Halleluiah. Check out the So Cal area for what to plant in our region now. Each month is a list of the best plant to plant then.

I have not really looked at the Urban Farm site until you asked the question. There is a downloadable e-book where Greg explains more about Urban farming. I think it can apply to either. However, it seems to focus more on intensive gardening and the book does mention Square Foot Gardening. I plan to visit his Urban Farm and do the tour. Will do a post on it after I have gone through it.

I'm not sure what Dave's Garden site is. Do you have a link? Thanks.

I think this is the site for Dave the garden guy:
http://www.gardenguy.com/

I wanted to chime in on the urban farm stuff. I have used the planting calendar and it is great. I've been attending some classes with the Urban farm guy and he does have lots of useful info. I have yet to do a tour of his place, he always has them when I'm working or out of town.

Thanks all for the information. Sorry, I've dropped off for a while -- business travel. At any rate, just planted the first few squares out of 16 prepared.
Daikon Radish, Nantes Carrot, New Zealand Spinach.
These were the first trials of the entire system and several bits and pieces need fixing, i. e. watering system, open spaces in fencing.
Next will be Broc, onions (both red and white), winter squash, swiss chard, cilantro, bok choy and chives.

Apparently it is necessary to hold off on lettuces until the soil is 75º or cooler. Currently its running between 90 and 120º. Keeping the soil damp seems to bring down the temp.

We're still having 90 - 95º days, but nights are getting really cool -- as low as 45. This should continue, with the days getting gradually cooler. I'd like to get all planted before the W***s start . With the weather changes, who knows what we'll get this year.

The season is definitely changing -- the cherry tomatoes have finally begun to grow, get red, taste sweet and produce new fruit.
We'll have good fruit until frosts take over -- middle to later November. Hopefully, I'll catch the day right and be able to cover the plants over night, keeping this harvest going for a while longer.

Dave's Garden site is a general purpose (lots of stuff to sell, also) gardening site with a ton of information. I've found detailed first and last frost dates by zip code, etc. However, its clunky to get to the data, rather than the stuff for sale -- and on my machine it tends to load slowly. So beware. Get to the Forum home page and you can go from there.

However, the information can be worth all the above.
