white eggplant & others
Hi, I am new to sfg, but because of new puppy who loves to dig, I planted mostly in pots this year. Never done that before and not good luck. My bean plants are dying (but I have been reading maybe too much water, so will replant in morning), tomatoes got tons of flowers that all dies, and now my eggplant is looking healthy, green, full of flowers and cute little white eggplants. I have never grown white..so who can tell me how big they should be before picking and do I cook them like purple?

Certainly glad to have a new member join us. Have you had a chance to read ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING yet? It is full of easy to understand instructions on creating your SFG.
I don't have puppies, but in addition to my Table Top SFGs, I also plant in containers. When you planted in containers, did you use Mel's Mix? Did your containers have good drainage holes? Usually, you can't over water Mel's Mix.
Have you been having hot weather, over 95 to 100 degrees? This can certainly cause your tomatoes to refuse to set fruit.
So happy you are having great success with your white eggplant. I have never grown white eggplant, so I am not sure what size they should be, in order to harvest. Do you know the name of the variety? You may be able to find info on when to harvest and suggested recipes by googling. Or, another member may have this info right at their fingertips.
Again, Welcome. Please keep us updated on your progress with your SFG. Share pictures too, cause we love them.

Re: white eggplant & others
Is it of the Japanese varity? Well, I imagine it is. I have one plant, and boy is it loaded. I go ahead and pick if the branch seems like it won't handle the fruit. Or I pick when it gets near the ground. Mine get about 8 to 10 inches long and no more that about 1.5 to 2 in. accross.
They get treated like the purple ones. I have used the purple ones with the skin on, but the white seems to have a tougher skin, so I peel it.

Re: white eggplant & others
Rider, I harvested my purple Japanese eggplants very young. When they are about 6-8 inches long because the skins are still tender and that plant out produced all the others in my garden this year. As a side note Mel says growing odd colored plants, white egg plants and yellow tomatoes for example helps to confuse pests (from the org. book). That seemed to be true when I was growing lemon boy toms, have you found it to help with the white EP? I am thinking about planting them next year. Oh, and I cook my Japanese EP just like the regular kind.

Cloud Nine Eggplant
Hi,
I don't know how many types of WHITE eggplant there are but I'm growing Cloud Nine so this link might be helpful if that's what you're growing as well.
http://www.bonnieplants.com/products/tabid/255/p-894-cloud-nine-white-eggplant.aspx
Says fruit size is 7 inches, but I harvested the one below @ 4 1/2" two days ago because it was splitting (and I got nervous), the ones on the plant are roughly 5" now and I plan on harvesting them in the next week.
Cheers
