Mel's book says to plant asparagus "1 or 4 per square foot". That is confusing. Every other crop on his chart gives a single spacing distance. If four plants can survive together in one square, why would you cheat yourself and plant only one? It's got to be one or the other. So which is it?

Density of asparagus plants Empty Aparagus Plants Density

Post  mijejo 7/20/2011, 10:13 am

I received 6 roots during a time when I only had one square available. So, I planted them all. My rationalization was that they may not all make it and if they did, I could thin out the extras.
They were one year roots and all made it! They are healthy and thriving. Since I am considering changing to table top SQF beds, I am holding off thinning them. I now have about three squares with 6 or more plants in each.
It may not be the recommended spacing for mature plants, but while they are maturing, it appears to work in my garden.
