New SFG w/ Questions
Hi everyone,
I have a few questions and some news for anyone interested. News first:
I called Lowe's today and was able to get them to order me some of the pre-packaged Mel's Mix (Garden Time SFG Soil) sent to a store in my area for pick-up. I'm sure most of you already know the mix is readily available on the West Coast, but I couldn't find any stock here in North Carolina.
Next are my questions:  I am going to get my mom started as a SFG as well instead of her usual gardening. I think this will be easier for her as she gets older. I ordered enough of the soil for her 4X4 garden as well. Can it sit in my garage until next Spring when I am ready to start her garden? She lives in another area so I won't be going down there until later. Should I keep it in my garage or put it in a clean compost bin? I also need to know when I'm ready to top off my soil beds after each harvest, do I use Mel's mix or am i supposed to top it off with soil? Will i be able to use any of my leftover Mel's mix for this if it has sat for a while?

Re: New SFG w/ Questions
I love the fact that you're going to set up a garden for your mother!
Yes, I'd store the bags of Mel's Mix in your garage for the time being.
Don't "top off" your squares after harvest; add a trowel or two of compost and mix it into your existing Mel's Mix. It's always best to make your own, if possible. Since I never seem to have enough for my three raised beds, I often resort to using a good pre-packaged mixed compost, such as E.B. Stone Planting Compost or vegetable and fruit planting mix. The results have been quite good!
Have you read All New Square Foot Gardening yet? If not, it will answer most of your questions for now.
Above all, do not top off with soil; doing so will defeat the purpose.

Re: New SFG w/ Questions
My suggestion would be to make a table top for your mom. A little more work, but she can stand up and garden that way. A SFG on the ground is about the best for tomatoes, cucumbers or any climber. A table top is wonderful for every thing else. Maybe you should discuss it with your mom and see what she thinks. After you get it set up, the work is so little, it's amazing.
