Disappearing tomatoes
This is my first SFG, I just have one 4x4 (have to prove to hubby it will work before I can build more...). I have a couple of tomatoes, a lot of bush beans and one zucchini. Everything is growing great!! But all of a sudden I noticed my beautiful green tomatoes are vanishing about one per night. Just....gone. Nothing on the soil, no pests, nothing.
I covered it yesterday with some bird netting I had, and today it was still gone. So we're assuming some sort of land critter? Squirrel? Rabbit? Do I do the chicken wire thing? I"m also wondering if they're eating my beans too.
PLease help, I want to save some of my first crop!!

Re: Disappearing tomatoes
Lzalvis, glad to have you join us but sure am sad that something is stealing your tomatoes.
Do you have deer? Though I admit when the deer hit my garden, it was not just one tomato, but whole plants, or at least the growing tip and most of the leaves from multiple plants.
You certainly could try a chicken wire cage to go over your SFG bed, which should help if it is rabbits or squirrels.
I have deer/wildlife netting over all of my table tops and around my garden bed. I have not had problems with wildlife damage this year.
Hope this helps.
Please keep us updated on your progress and share pictures too!
Again, Welcome!

Re: Disappearing tomatoes
I ran out yesterday to my friendly neighborhood ACE hardware (those guys know everything about everything...) and we talked thru some options. as we speak, I am putting chicken wire around it...

Re: Disappearing tomatoes
I sure am curious too what is happening. Tomato plants are too tall to put cages over (unless you build a real big cage) but hopefully the chicken wire around the box will do the trick. I sure hope so. Let us know what happens. If this doesn't work we'll try to brainstorm with you to find an answer.
