To birds it's just a seed that is easy pickin's. I usually keep a net of some kind over my bean plantings until they're up and that seed casing falls off. If nothing is left but the stump of a stem you will need to replant the bean. If you still see the Y where the second leaves will grow, you're probably okay. Re-plant to be sure!

Short answer....YES

Replant and cover with a chick wire cage (or with anything you can think of.....in the PNW you can use a cloche. Milk jugs work but are usually not large enough for the whole square foot. Beans need the whole leaf system that they sprout with until they have about 4 to 6 true leaves and an actual root system. If the infant leaves are clipped off the plant starves.

Yes they do!! And pesky tiny slugs have been eating mine. From the looks of things this spring it is going to be a good year for them/bad year for me. They are less than pin head size right now....I can hardly see them but they inflict so much damage over night.

I also have a very pesky crow that I have caught with onions in his/her beak!! So I am going to have to do put something up to it out of my plants before the strawberries start ripening.

Beans and peas both. Stellar jays are real bad about it. I cover mine with netting till they're a couple inches high.

I put a sign on my garden that reads:

"This SFG guarded by trained attack cat three nights a week. Guess which three."

It seems to work for now......or maybe it's the bird netting. do birds eat the tops off of new beans? 601593

Last year I thought it was the chipmunks that did that to my beans. But the crazy thing was that they grew back!

Slugs the size of pinheads, at night? Maybe that's why some of my green bean plants seem to have their leaves eaten. I looked at the leaves today and couldn't find any culprits. They come out at night to eat these leaves?

By the way, we watched a nature show, and crows are one of the most intelligent animals (or whatever you call them).

Might anyone happen to know why green bean plants are light green instead of dark green? I topped mine with additional compost the other day thinking maybe they are low on nitrogen, but it didn't seem to change the color. I remember beans (KY wonders) being a deep, dark green, not faded and light green like these. (They're about 6" high now)

I actually woke up last night thinking - maybe it's the well water I'm watering them with...
