Leeks in Peetpot Question
Trying my hand at leeks this year. I purchased a couple of peetpots to transplant.
Here are some pics:
So the directions say to drop the peetpot in a hole and let the pot degrade.
My question is this: Would you break up the leeks and space out to 16 per square? Or would you follow the directions an let them grow in in a clump in the square?
Not sure how delicate leeks are as plants. They may be fond of each other at this age and not want to be broken up.
Thanks for any advice!

I would take them out of the pot by gently ripping the sides of the pot, kind of like peeling a banana. To separate the plants, loosen the roots in a shallow bucket of water. I would guess you could do well with 9/sq.ft. I planted mine much close together, but plan on thinning through the growing season) Off set the seedlings when transplanting for best growing room. good luck

Re: Leeks in Peetpot Question
here is a great video i found on how to transplant leeks.....when you transplant them you dont cover up the bulb part of the leek with dirt like you normaly do with onions...in stead you make a hole...plop one in and then water.....leaving the leek sit in the hole with out dirt.....im growing them this year for the first time my self....

Thanks for sharing that clip Rose. I was going to cover those puppies up but I'll give this technique a try as well.
Cheers!

Re: Leeks in Peetpot Question
your welcome
if i understand right....by leaving the dirt out of the hole....the leek will be able to grow and fill in that hole......i still dont understand the differnce from an onion and a leek they seem to me to be the same thing....but for some reason....leeks need that space to grow....weird huh

Re: Leeks in Peetpot Question
As far as I know the idea of making a hole and dropping the leeks into it then just watering them in is to prevent soil and grit from entering the stem between the leaves and staying there as the leek grows. The deeper they are the longer the length of white stem you get. It helps getting them in the hole if you get the roots of the leek wet, I think. Leeks are stems but onions are bulbs IYSWIM.

So above is a 9 leek square. Also planted a 16 leek square to see how that turns out. If I remember, I'll report back how it went.
