Starting over... Oh, Hail!
We just had a 5 minute storm... literally 5 minutes long... we had one inch of rain... and about the same amount of marble sized hail and 60 mph wind gusts...
I just put in all of the new varieties of green pepper which I raised from seed, new tomato plants, again raised from seed, and it wiped out my cabbage, peas, beans, cucumbers, most of the carrots and onions. The garden is a total loss it looks like. Only the potatoes seemed to weather the storm without a total loss of leaves. I think I might save one or two pepper plants but the rest are literally ripped to shreds.
I can replant some things like the cucumbers and lettuce, but I'll have to go with starts from someplace now. The adventure of trying new varieties is gone.
I was really looking forward to tasting these new varieties to check out how much better or worse they would produce or taste. Sigh.

How terrible. I really feel for you. I would be in tears if I lost all my crops before spring had even really begun.
Mother Nature can be cruel.
Hope you manage to get started again. The only saving grace is that its the beginning of the season so there's time to put in more.
Good luck.

How terrible!!! I am so sorry!
I too would be so discouraged. Keep us posted on how the rebuilding goes.
Again, so sorry.

Re: Starting over... Oh, Hail!
I feel your pain...had that happen last year. We had really bad weather this weekend and literally 1/2 hour before I was going to plant I decided to play it safe and haul in a few hundred plants that hadn't gone in yet. Glad I waited. We had hail, wind, heavy down pours etc...

Re: Starting over... Oh, Hail!
fiddleman,
So sorry for the damage. We are all at the mercy of weather. I just got all my plants in Saturday and now we are under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning here in Pendleton County, WV. Yikes!!! Predictions of 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail. I only hear it rumbling in the distance right now, but the lightning flickering is scary.
Not much I can do now, but pray for my plants. My sugar snaps just started really blooming today.
Will report later....

So sorry. We went through it last year too. I lost nearly everything. Potatoes did survive and anything in pots that I hauled into the house. Treat yourself at the greenhouse with some new seedlings and try not to dwell on it.

Our storm warning was cancelled, and we just had some wind & rain with a nice light show. Whew!
My heart sincerely goes out to all who have been affected by this season of storms!

Re: Starting over... Oh, Hail!
So sorry for your loss!!! That can be so frustrating, especially when you start from seed. At least the things lost were replaceable, and do treat yourself to some transplants. If you need any seeds and want to try a few let us know, maybe someone will have some.
Re: Starting over... Oh, Hail!
Just read this thread, fiddleman, and so sorry for the loss of all your hard and time-consuming work.
Can you imagine this happening in the old days when a pioneer family had to rely on the crops they grew. I realize that although what we grow is very helpful with the food budget, I realize that I do not plant nearly enough to be able to survive on it.
Let us know how you come back from this. We will be rooting for you.
As an aside, I am so sorry for all the people in Joplin going through that tornado. Our friend to the South, (I'm in Canada) are really going through it again this year.

Re: Starting over... Oh, Hail!
That completely sucks fiddleman! It's one thing to say "oh well, it's only seeds" when the seeds don't germinate or baby seedlings don't make it but a whole garden of plants from seed? I was running errands yesterday when it started to downpour buckets. No hail, but my first thought was "crap , I just put out all my transplants!"

I feel your pain...
We had a pretty heavy storm come rolling through our place this morning. It was still dark so i couldn't see the damage...I imagine that my carrots are toast at the moment. Scared to go home tonight and see what happened...
Good luck with your replanting.

Re: Starting over... Oh, Hail!
thanks for all the moral support! Just bought 36 new Green Pepper plants to put in... here are some pictures of the destruction... all in just 5 minutes...
Looking down the long bed - I think it reminds me of the pictures from WWI and the trench warfare after all the artillery bombardment.
Pictures of the potato plants - the holes aren't from bugs, they were hit by the hail. Looks like mini-metorites!
More potato pictures
Smashed a number of the plant tags as well. Looks like someone went nuts with a BB gun.
What is left of a green pepper plant.
Just look at one of my Roma tomatoes
It all happened so quick there wasn't much to be done to save anything, but I am starting the replanting today. Hopefully I have paid my dues this year!

Good luck with the replanting. You'll get a crop, only it will have cost you more than you intended in both dollars and labor.
I wish you blue skies and light showers the rest of the season.

This spring is the worst that I can recall for weather. I hope it stops soon and starts playing nice again. Good luck with your replanting.

Man, that does look like something from a WWI footage tape, or something my kids and the dogs did, take your pick. It may not help, but I was sick to my stomach for you when I saw the pictures.
