pics of my raised beds
well this is my first yr doing anykind of garden. i built two 4 x 12 beds. i got the lumber free from a neighbor. and i didn't follow mels mix 100 pecent. i only used half the vermiculite. i added alittle more peat moss and compost then he says. but this fall i will add more vermiculite to the mix. any ways here are some pics of what i have soo far.
here are the beds i built back in the first week of april. i bought the brocoli plants and tomato plants this year. i was alittle late getting started on things.
here are the potatoes after 3 weeks.they are about 15 inches tall here.
here the potatoes are after 1 month. right at 19 inches tall. i built a box for them trying to get alittle more out of them.
here are my broccoli plants.i have some heads on them can't wait to eat them. also the bottom leaves are turning brown and dieing.not sure why. should i trim them off?
here are my tomamtoes. i got like 5 already growing. we hd a light frost the other night about 36 deg. hurt a few leaves on them. again should i trim these off. they are brown and dieing off.
i know its hard to tell but there is about 130 or soo carrots here. i think they all sprouted.
here is my okra. i have about 22 plants. they all just about sprouted in my sun roomin 3 days and grew real fast. once i put them in the beds growth has seemed to slow down abit.
here is my squash its yellow crockneck.
i also have swiss chard, green oinion and white, cuccumber, watermelon, lettucce, basil, bell and bannana ppeppers. they are just not ready for the camera haha.

Wow, what a great start! Be sure to add mix to your potato box as they grow. Everything looks so healthy.

Nice garden! I trimmed my broccoli leaves off when they turned yellow/brown earlier this week. didn't seem to hurt them.

Re: pics of my raised beds
Great start!! I, too, skimped the vermiculite my first season. I hadn't read the book yet, though. This year, I built new gardens due to moving into a new house. I didn't skimp on anything and went straight MM.
Don't forget to add the vermiculite as soon as you can. It's absolutely worth it. Until you do, plan on paying more attention than usual to watering and keeping your soil moist.

Potatoes look lush. The broccoli looks almost ready, if you see ANY yellow flowers start to open, or the head loosening up, it is getting past prime.

Re: pics of my raised beds
the brocoli is getting alittle bit loose on the outer edges. this is my first time with it. and i don't wanna wait to long and then it flowers on me. like a different person posted with out these forums. i would be waiting for something that looks like the stuff in the stores. and now i know thats not gonna happen.

Cut that puppy off, but cut on an angle. Leave plenty of stalk, cause you will be getting little baby broccolis growing up along the stem. They are tiny but very tasty.

Re: pics of my raised beds
Wow! That's really impressive. I haven't even planted yet. I tried broccoli in the garden last year and got nothing. I'm giving it another go this year. I'm hoping the new earth I added will make a difference.

Isn't it something how fast the potato plants come up. I was stunned the year I grew my blue potatoes.
Re: pics of my raised beds
i will get a pic later. but i just got my first harvest out of my garden. i cut the brocoli off this morning. i could not stand to risk it going to flower.
and yes i was totaly amazed at how fast those spuds are growing. tommrow i will get more compost(manure) mainly and make some more MM i gotta get this box filled up.
and the box in the sfg. well i had to do something to try and increase my harvest. mel says to put 3 plants per sq. i was like no way thats gonna fit lol. soo i put on per sq. and built upwards.

Re: pics of my raised beds
here are my potatoes growing fast as ever.
here is my squash and zucchini they are just now realy starting to grow. i think i may have to stake them up. they seem to be leaning over in the MM. and they are bush type.
here are my cucumbers in the corner. and a few younger tomatoes. if you look in the corner i have pulled out my broccoli they were done . time to put something in its place. and if you look in the background you can see some okra starting to grow again. not sure but they seem slow to grow.
i gotta get some pics of my tomatos and carrots. my peppers didn't grow. soo i have re-planted them for the third and last time. i got my fingers crossed.

Wow! Those potatoes are amazing. I didn't realize they grew so fast. I'm starting to get green growth, but it's not exactly bursting out of the pot, so I hope they're okay.
Whatever you're using for soil, you must be doing something right!

Re: pics of my raised beds
i am useing a mix close to Mels mix. but not 100% his mix. i didn't use the right amount of vermiculite.
i think those taters are about 27-30'' high. i wish everything else grew that fast haha.

Re: pics of my raised beds
ok who knew i would have 7 foot tall tomato plants. ok i am sure you old timer sfg ppl knew. but i was surprized for sure. now if i can fix the yellowing/dieing leaves and get some more maters i wll be happier.
squash and zuccini are kinda hit or miss. i guess i gotta pollinate them my-self. the plants are huge just waiting on them to give me some more fruit.
carrots. hmm they say on packet 10weeks to harvest. i pulled the largest one at 11 weeks and had about 1/2'' wanna-be carrot. soo will wait about 4 more weeks that will put them at 15 and see how they are.
watermelons are just now realy growing plants are about 18inches long. hope they start to take off some.
cucumbers. hmm they where very slow like watermelons. but in the last week have took off. got about 8 little ones. i almost pollinated them tonight but got busy with other stuff.
hmm okra has over tripled in sized in the last two weeks nothing to eat yet.had some flowers thought.
the pepper plants i bought from the store two weeks ago are doing good. had a few flowers but no peppers yet.
and the potatoes are still going. i can't wait till they start to die off and get to dig them up.
