Hay - green or brown/ Empty Hay - green or brown/

Post  Mirjam on 5/6/2011, 2:00 am

Hi all,
if I put hay in my compost pile, does it count as brown material, or as green? I mean, before it became hay, it was grass Very Happy
My husband gave me a few chickens lately, and they get to eat about all the greens I normally put in the compost, so i'm a bit concerned about the ratio green/brown in the pile. The hay is used inside the henhouse, so when it goes into the compost pile, it's full of chicken poo too.

Should I trie to get more greens to get the process going, or can I just add a bucket of water from time to time? Any tips are welcome!

The hay is considered a brown and the manure is considered a green. Coffee grounds are a green. If you can get a local coffee shop to save you their spent grounds, your chickens can still have their veggies and you can have great compost.
