I'm so jealous!!!

Post  vallie61 on 7/29/2011, 2:39 pm

Your garden's look great just curious of your MM mixture my husband built 7 beds for me I loaded them up with all different kinds of seeds none of them but the carrots took they were all planted on May 1st in Illinois I pulled up a carrot the other day on the 20th of July and there is all green with no carrot :@(

I have the same excitement everyday for the things that have grown alittle but I'm way behind schedule I have planted in this location I put the beds for years this is my first year of SFG my peppers were planted at middle of May they are still the same size by now they would have been 2 ft or more tall so big they lean over I replanted the seeds again and again nothing sprouts my zuks are doing well ,yellow squash is growing slow but I have been getting some I had to self pollinate which I have never done before tomatoes are doing good and I do have 5 baby watermelons so as you can see some things are doing ok and others bombed. I'm alittle discouraged we put so much time and $$$$ into this project I purchased a tumbling composter and put chicken ,rabbit, grass, straw, some horse manure, beet greens from a friends garden and some mushroom compost from a local mushroom farm here in the area so I'm encouraged this will help my problem next year I hope :@).

Just wanted to ask your recipe and tell you BRAVO good job your lucky!!!!Very Happy

By the way I have posted 4 pictures of my garden in the gallery I'm trying to fiqure out how to get it out there for others to see. lol

I pretty much followed it by the book with the peat moss, vermiculite and 5 different kinds of compost. I used: steer, chicken, mushroom and 2 different organic blends for my composts.

I found organic broccoli plants today - 8 for $2! Seeing how we love broccoli around here and it went well in spring, I decided to plant them all. I also planted 2 squares of sugar snap peas in the other squares:

We are getting strawberries just about every day for a snack:

In my other garden bed we have sprouts from the carrots I planted a few weeks ago:

The tomato plants are doing ok despite our cool weather recently - we have 3 tomatoes growing so far:

The pepper plants aren't really doing much so not sure if they will grow anymore or not. The onions are ready to pull - I will probably do that tomorrow and we plan on using those 4 squares ALL for spinach, because it did so well in spring. I planted one square of radishes, one swiss chard and the other 2 more carrots:

Housekeeper, I am BLOWN AWAY with your first SFG. Great Job. I've been doing this for over 20 years and can tell you the smiles never end. It took me a few years to get the production you have.

Keep up the good work!

@Homekeeper wrote:That is the only way I know to use kale is kale chips! Very Happy I may just end up doing that for all of the kale but I was wanting to figure out other ways to use it too.

You should really try cooking kale with smoked ham hocks and a spash of cider vinegar. Oh that's sooooo good

what to do with kale

Post  Ben Linthicum on 3/2/2012, 6:26 pm

I find the best use for kale is juicing it. It doesnt tast all that great by itself but with cucumber carrots and granny smith apples, it's fine. I have seen a few recipes that wilt the kale in a pan much like spinach too, but I haven't tried it.

kale smoothie

Post  PattyM on 3/2/2012, 8:45 pm

A really healthy and delicious way to use kale is in a green smoothie! One recipe is to blend a cup of frozen berries, 1 pear, 1 cup or so of water or almond milk, and a handful of kale. Surprisingly good!
