Name your mascot..
Seems a couple people have taken to naming a plant in their garden. I LOVE the idea.
Should we all play along and pick a goofy plant and give him/her a goofy name? I'll be looking for a "standout" tomorrow, personally...

Re: Name your mascot..
I named a little mantis in my garden today. His name is Sheldon! Although, I have a feeling I'll be calling all the ones I see Sheldon!
Re: Name your mascot..
Sheldon I think I will name my Black from Tula Tomato Boris a good Russian name. I know it is a boy's name but I like it and it's not like it would come when I called anyway.

Re: Name your mascot..
I call them all baby, and my biggest job is to protect them from the goats, which I had to remind the goats (mama & 2 babies) yesterday of the "NO Goats In the Garden" rule. She got a chunk of 1 califlower plant, and the babies were eyeballing my Kentucky Beefstakes I had just planted a few hours before (started from seed too). I had sat in my chair to survey my work and dozed off, the male goat alerted me of the rules being broken (more likely he was jealous) and woke me from my nap. My poor babies (plants), ever try to chase a goat slowly, so as to not make it run, through a maze of boxes?

I think I'll call my lovely Cherokee Purple "Sacatomata" in hopes that it is a self fulfilling prophecy!

Re: Name your mascot..
These are awesome.
Val, maybe you name your goats instead?
I will have to see what comes to me when it comes to plants. These things obviously can't be forced. However, I have some marauders in my bird garden. I have The Grackle Gang and the Starling Syndicate. I loathe both of them when they show up in numbers. They wipe my feeders out and the little pretty birdies just sit around going......"Wha happen'd, Boss? Can we get some more food down herr?"
I may take to naming my pests more than the plants......seems they are more fun to rag on anyway.

Re: Name your mascot..
As you already know, I named my compost pile "Gomer" after Gomer Pile. (We had a discussion about this in another thread) As our sense of humour tends to be 'warped and twisted' we name a lot of stuff at our place. Sometimes people think we are kinda weird. LOL! (Ya THINK?) And on occasion somewhat sacrilegious which is why I used to get in trouble with the church board. "Arthur" is short for ar (our) thermometer. "Tom" (as in Tom Cruise) is the name of the cruise control in the car. "Auto" is one of my two favourite men on board our sailboat. He is in second place but if he could mix margaritas and mojitos he just might depose my current favourite, Captain Bob who doubles as my cabin boy. (Auto is short for automatic steering device or Auto Pilot) If I can find a small Elmo doll I will add him as well with some wings and a halo since St. Elmo is the patron saint of sailors.
I will have to look for some plants to name as well.
One of my fav's on here is Acara's Beauregard the Crab.

Well I am so not as creative as you people! We have an archway in the garden that is old and rusty and falling apart, Joe wants to build me a wood one, I told him to wait till next year...too many other things to do right now. Maybe I will name the archway Rusty. See....so uncreative.

Rusty is fine, kina cute!!
BBG I did name the goats, several names in fact, but most of them I cannot put here as this is a family safe place. However, we have Billy (kids named him) he likes the Billy Bayou by Roger Miller. Then there is Matilda, the mom, Red and Cocoa the babies, named for their colors.
Got my corn in today, when it starts to get about knee high my whole garden will be known as Paradise on Earth, who needs Margharittaville???

My favourite movie! I watch that one whenever I'm stressed out and need a good cry. Sally Field gets me every time.

Name your mascot.
I went to check on my veggies this morning. One of the two zucchini plants just seemed to have this gleam in its eye and somehow seemed to have a personality that the other one didn't have. So I chose to name him Audrey II- after the man-eating plant in Little House of Horrors. Not sure whether the Audrey in the movie was male or female, though it seemed to have a man's voice. The newly named Audrey II zucchini is definitely a guy - you can just tell from his oh-so-macho attitude. My thinking is that he plans to try to take over the whole 4X4 space, if given half a chance. I think I'm really gonna have to watch out for this one.

Re: Name your mascot..
Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes are great stress relivers for me. Of course when I need a day off, I turn to Gone With The Wind, and then it's sequal Scarlet. That one is garaunteed to clear the house. Unfortunatley the older I get the more like Ouiser I get, hence my quote in my signature.
I am naming my boxes though, I have 2 called Salad Bar.

Re: Name your mascot..
I refuse to watch Steel Magnolias on principle alone. My wife has tried to get me to watch the movie, but I never sit through more than a half hour. It doesn't help that I already know it makes people cry all the time. I prefer me some Field of Dreams if I need a cry.......almost can't watch that danged movie anymore though because if I do I feel I'm turning myself into a woman intentionally. Therapy in a good cry? BAH! Sweep it under the rug and bury those feelings I say. Let them come out later when it's a total surprise to everyone at the family reunion and we can really make an arse out of ourselves. If you're gonna do something....do it right!!
Roger Miller? Seriously? Who the heck is that? Did you know you can't take a shower in a parakeet cage? Oh, they oughta take a rope and hang me...high from the highest treeeeeeeeeeee. Makes me holla hidy hoe...burns me tummy don't ya know. But, alas, I'm a man of means by no means....King of the Road!
Yeah, never heard of him....lol.

Do Waka Do BBG, Do Waka Do.
Our local weather man was in SM, he was the father of the 2 children always being talked about, the daughter caught with the tinsel around her knees. It was a big deal even here when it was being filmed as our local news comes from Shreveport LA.
Oh, and My Uncle Used to Love me but She Died.

I've got a very deformed looking plant that was supposed to be a broccoli , but looks like something else entirely. It has a bunch of leaves growing every which way out of the middle. I've left it in to see what it grows up to be.
I've named it Ursula.

Maybe I should grow some of Boff's frizzy haired lettuce and call it Medusa!
We watched Steel Magnolias last night and it wasn't as sad this time around...neither Joe nor I cried...I think after The Notebook your crying bar changes LOL.
Umm...Ouiser is the reason I LOVE that movie....when I picture myself their age....I see a Ouiser-esque woman in my future.

Tell me about it! The Notebook is definitely a two tissue box affair in my household (one for me and one for my hubbie ). Great movie though...
