I am getting ready to build my first square foot garden. I have access to the most beautiful, black gold, rotted horse manure. Can this be my compost or do I need to add other sorts of compost to this? The book says use a blend of 5 different kinds. I wasn't sure if this is also true if you have your own source of homemade compost. Maybe I should buy some bags to mix with my homegrown?

Hi Lynnnie, welcome to the SFG Forums! compost fix 61949

I wish I had access to the same beautiful black gold that you have! I would mix it with other composts too, though, unless the manure is part of a blended homemade compost with fruit and veggie scraps, leaves, grass etc. The horse manure would be considered one of the five ingredients.

Hope this helps.

And to think -I used to have all the horse manure I could shake a stick at. (Why do people want to shake a stick at things?)

So, yes, as Mckr says, you still need to use other things. Your horse manure will be beautiful and wonderful, but the reason you need different types is to get a wide range of nutrients and stuff. (stuff - that's scientific compost fix Icon_wink )
