So farthe harvest has been cilantro, Egyptian Walking onions, and I have been eating a handful of peas every few days - the Wascally Wabbit got a good chunk of the few peas I planted (as well as all my broccoli and a few kohlrabi). My regular onions are doing really well and I could pull a few of them for small onions whenever I would like. Personally, I want them to get HUGE! It looks like I may be getting the first of my beans in a week or so as well.

I just replanted my next set of lettuce, a la Boffer: Drunken Woman Frizzy Headed! I think it should be served with a nice red wine vinaigrette!

WooHoo! I just knew it'd be wonderful, and it is. Congratulations! So, your next project is a rabbit-proof fence, right? Keep us updated. Nonna

Definitely Wabbit-Pwoofing for next year! At least with the Broccoli and Peas it is leaving my tomatoes alone! Last year it ate 5 tomato plants before I got serious about rodent patrol.

Nice boxes, and with them being cedar, they should last you a while. My pine boxes are already rotting from the inside after 2 years of use(not coated and of course not pressure treated). One thing I've learned though, is don't stop the weed barrier at the edge of the box, go a little further(by a foot or so). Also, overlapping that cloth does not necessarily stop the grass from growing up. I overlapped by about a foot and put 3 layers of newspaper on top. I still have grass trying to grow into my boxes. Next time I'm going with a couple layers of cardboard on top of the fabric if I ever put a box on the ground again.

I have a bit more of a weed problem than most will have because even tho' my boxes are only 1x6 boards my modified MM is 9-12 inches deep in all boxes with no weed barrier underneath - altho' the original lasagna beds did have cardboard and newspaper underneath for the start-up. I had been sheet composting (lasagna gardening) for several years in the areas that are now my SFG boxes. I had been layering my compostables, manure, and peat moss there for quite some time so all I needed to make it complete MM was the vermiculite. To add to the height of the boxes, I mixed new MM in the top of them and then dug it all down and mixed well so it would be mixed and loose for the entire 9-12 inches. Since there is no weed barrier and I have been dealing with blow-in weed seeds there for a while, I have a few more than most, but I am AMAZED at how easy it has been to pull them and keep it under control! Let the embarrassment begin..... - Page 2 410210 I also have the depth for any crop I choose to grow, and great worm activity even w/o worm tubes so I get lots of worm castings added in.

Well, you really put in a lot of work. You don't have anything at all to be embarrassed about. I wish I could have had boxes.

Thanks Cynergist! This is the first year that I have gotten this far into the season and my garden still looks neat and under control. I have 2 trellises left to put together and the rest of the season will be harvest, Harvest, HARVEST!
