Hello from Lake Charles, Louisiana!
This is my first square foot garden...I found Mel's book (at the Dollar Store) and as I was flipping through the pages I just had to buy it! Fell in love with this book and how simple and logical he made the method that I just had to try it! I have an over population of squirrels in my yard and neighborhood, so I decided to entirely enclose my sqare foot garden in chicken wire on the top and around the outside, and then utilized the inside of the studs to attach the netting trellis for the vining crops. I've never done gardening like this before so I am a little nervous! I am looking forward to chatting with people to see what works for you....or in case I have questions...

How fortunate to have found the ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING book at the Dollar Store. This is a great way to garden and simple too.
Squirrels can be a pain in the toosch. If you attach the trellis netting to the inside of the studs, will you have enough room to get all the way around the box? Ease of access is really important.
Please keep us updated on your plans and share pictures too!

neighbor, I'm right next door in NE TX, almost an hour from Shreveport. We love to help, and we love pictures when you can post. Check out the Regional Forums on the main page, you can get more local tips from those closer to you or in the same climate as you, but you don't have to just stick to one region, we all post in them all.
Re: Hello from Lake Charles, Louisiana!
Good to have ya!
Your critter cage sounds impressive. I'm having a hard time visualizing your trellis with the cage. How tall is it? Do you have any pictures of it?
Make sure to keep that book near you as you garden. It holds a lot of answers to common garden problems. Of course, you could always ask us as many questions as you might have. We are always willing to help whenever we can.
Also, please stop by your regional forum and get to know the folks down there. The regional forums have lots of region specific information. Further, you can get info on what others in your area are up to.
Take care and happy gardening!

Re: Hello from Lake Charles, Louisiana!
Wow, very nice! I'm doing something similar to keep the birds and squirrels out. Chicken wire on top, bird mesh on the sides. I plan to attach the bird mesh to something (2x4, pvc, etc.) at the bottom that will help keep the mesh straight and tight on the frame. I think I could then raise up a whole section and hang it on some angled nails or something.
I'd rather do something like what you have, though... chicken wire all 'round, with a door...

Thanks! It makes total sense now, and the cage is even more impressive in photos! Your garden looks Tonka tough!
