Re: Cincinnati Folks
Yeah, I building a couple of 2x6's to go a little closer to my house and I'm putting the stuff that needs more maintenance up close, like tomatoes. They will also be more protected from chipmunks and squirrels because the guard dogs can see them there from their post on the couch.
I wouldn't say I've given up on finding course verm but last year, I couldn't find it anywhere til after I had made my first 2 boxes, then they ran out quick. So The first 2 boxes are made with medium and the last with course. And the pots are half and half. I can tell the difference when digging in it which is which but I saw no difference in the production or health of the plants so I'm not going to stress about it as much this year. I'm still going to look for the course stuff but I won't let the lack of it keep me from getting rolling on the new boxes.
Here is a link to what the difference looked like last year:

Darren, I saw your post about Dayton Hydro on the other thread so I stopped by and picked up 2 bags, thanks!!
I just ordered all my seeds and I'm gathering supplies and starting to plan. Ugh, it hasn't even really snowed here yet, it's going to be a lonnnggg winter!

I didn't see the stock, they only had one bag out on the floor so I asked if he had more. He didn't hesitate, and just said "oh, yeah" and ran back and got me 2 so I assume they weren't running low yet.

Re: Cincinnati Folks
I ended up purchasing the last three bags of coarse vermiculite from Dayton Hydro here in Cincinnati today. I'm sure they'll get more in, I just wanted to let folks here know to call before heading there for it. One of the bags was torn open and they took five dollars off the price. Great guys!

Oh my dears I hope you are all home, warm, and safe tonite. I had no trouble getting from Hyde Park to Mariemont at 10ish, but it is getting quite ugly. And it is supposed to be 50 again on Sunday. Oy!

Marvin's Part 2
I have a fairly new job at a large company in Mason. Nearly 2,000 people in our location alone. Last week they rolled out the Zero Waste program, which includes compost bins in each canteen. There was a big promotion at lunch today so I went to the cafeteria to get my goodies. I asked about the compost - where is it being done and what will be done with it when it is ready, etc. So they steer me over to the "consultant" guy - he is with Marvins!! We are shipping our stuff to them! He said we may even try to get some vegetable gardens on site. I'm pretty excited! The only thing that is better than bringing the compost home for my garden is to get it from Marvins. Hopefully it will be mixed with zebra doo, too! I'm so proud of the company!

nancy, that is exciting news! I hope they go public with their news. Perhaps other companies will follow their lead.

Oh man, I've been missing out. This is awesome having a Cincinnati board! I can't believe how many of us there are!
Re: Cincinnati Folks
Congrats Nancy on working for a great company! Did they say if you can get a company discount? LOL now that would be the greatest company to work for!
Off topic: Anyone interested in doing a " Tour of Cincinnati Gardens" with all of us on here now?
We could set it up for a Sunday afternoon, I could put together a program of directions to each of our locations and hand it out at the starting point.

Re: Cincinnati Folks
they guy from Marvin's gave me his business card. I'm considering emailing him to see about a discount since I will be directly contributing.
And yes! I love the tour idea! It might take more than one day since we are all so spread out. Perhaps we split it up somehow.

Actually a little north in Loveland, OH. I run the Granny's Garden School program where we follow a gardening practice that square foot gardeners would recognize though we do not call it that. We have about 1,500 students gardening in more than 100, 3' x 10' garden beds so when they plant, it's about the equivalent of 1 ft - maybe 18 inches - per student. Each classroom has two garden beds and there are about 29 students in each class. So there are 14-15 students around each bed. The only way to keep order is having each focus on a specific space.
You are welcome to start or finish the Cincinnati tour at our place. Everyone can pick a bouquet of flowers as a finale.

What a horrible job you have.....teaching small children, outside, in the nice weather,.......Wait I want that job!
It really sounds wonderful what you are doing. I would be really interested in coming to visit. PM me the details and I will see if the kids and I can stop by soon.
Again Welcome aboard.
