Has anyone out there grown sugar babies or cantaloupe vertically and supported the fruit with hammocks? I know it would require a pretty heavy trellis to support the weight. I saw this one online today. I like it, but I don't have a way to haul lumber that large, not to mention the work setting the post, etc.

Any suggestions?

I've grown cantalopes vertically using metal conduit as a vertical frame, and trellis netting as shown in the SFG books. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture, but I do have a picture of a watermelon that my son and I grew vertically. I used a sling made from cloth that I hung from the trellis.

Nature's trellis; my sketti squash started to grow outside the SFG and found a new trellis. I grew I think 3 or four squash in a evergreen tree!

This year I plan on doing more squash (spaghetti, vining zuke), pumpkin, watermelons again, and some muskmelon/cantelope

chocolate pop - can you share how you protected your melons from wind making them fall off vine early?

we grew canteloupe last year - and they didn't need support - they were small - but omg so good. . .

this year we are going to be expanding with as others have said (we're doing similarly, *grin*) - pumpkins, squash, watermelon. my oldest son really wants those so we bought small variety seeds . . .

insights would be most welcome because we not only love sfg we love having the coolest garden in town. (sorry but it's the truth!)

i've had so many folks last summer who would stop and chat at my house because of my canteloupe on the trellis (it was growing in my front yard, lol). a lot of folks are considering gardening and SFG style because of our success last year.

anyways i sure did yammer on but i really would love to know how you attached your melons to the trellis and what you used - new or used pantyhose? (i would have to buy some - i'm a homemaker and don't wear pantyhose as I prefer jeans and tshirts. . ) but i will put a post on freecycle asking for used pantyhose so hopefully i'll get some usable free stuff that way. . .

Honestly Happy Frog, I didn't protect them from the wind. The vine is so strong sometimes they didn't even need support. the ones in the trees didn't get pantyhose simple cause i couldn't reach.

I asked my mom for panty hose, got some from freecycle, and dollar store, I don't wear them either!! But I plant on also making slings out of tshirt strips also.

I grew loupes last year vertically and had them in some hammocks made of shocks/hose I stole from my wife. She did not mind once she had some fresh melon for breakfast.
