Window Quilt
This may very well go into the Off Topic thread, but you will see how it ties into SFG in a minute.
I have a window in my kitchen that faces east, and from about 4PM until just after dinner time (does not matter what time we eat, unless the sun has set) the sun shines directly in that window. I have to have windows and I need to have them uncovered for as long as possible, but this one needs a good cover. I have decided on a window quilt. These can be as thin (muslin instead of batting) or as thick as you want. I have opted for a real quilt type, but double sided so I can turn it when the season changes, I'll have one for Spring/Summer, and one for Fall/Winter.
I want to incorperate the SFG Method on this. I will be using different things for my "grids" the spring is an off white background with ivy, the summer will be again off white with tiny flowers. What I need is more ideas on what you harvest for spring. I've got 2 flower squares, 2 lettuce squares, sugar peas, spinach, and then I draw a blank. I'll be doing these "applique" (cutting out shapes and sewing them on) unless I find a really good deal on material that has veggies/fruit already on it. I do have some material with strawberries on it, but that's something you harvest in summer.
Any ideas, I am considering maybe one square with scissors, a pencil, and a trowel, so I'm not limited to food.

Re: Window Quilt
How strange. The sun in Maine sets in the West, not the east.
That said, how about Swiss chard, Parsnips (overwintered), radishes, Arugula, Red Orach, (most greens can be harvested in both spring and fall).
Sounds like a good idea. I love quilts. I can't wait to see yours finished.

Re: Window Quilt
My bad, I had not yet had my daily coffee quota-it does set in the west. teeheehee.
I was hoping you would pop in, I have scraps all over my bed, and my books out, as well as a quilting site and the 4-patch stacker tutorial you shared on your quilting blog. I'm finding all kinds of ideas for making the quilt, but not quite what I want, and making a purchase right now of anything is out.
My window area I want to cover (it's rounded at the top) is 36"W by 42"L, and I don't want to go all the way down as it's in front of the sink, and I am thinking maybe adding tabs at the top instead of casing to run the rod through, and just roll it up when it's not needed and tie it.
Thanks for the ideas!!!

Re: Window Quilt
The idea sounds great to me. I like being able to roll it up so you can see outside and enjoy the world when the sun isn't glaring in your eyes.
If you have scrappy whites and blues, you can just have clouds across from left to right at the curved section and then squares the rest of the way down.
Good luck.

OOOH, I can just see the chard with the multicolored stems and radishes with the red tops just peeking out of the soil.

Re: Window Quilt
Oh that multi colored shard would go so well with the kaliedescope carrots I want to put on there. I'm thinking COLOR so no matter what I have on my table to cover the damage the kids have done, it will all match, and no I'm not ready to make a matching table runner. It's like the set of dishes I want, the Fiesta, in every single color, so that if one breaks, I still have a matched set, who cares if you have a red plate, green bowl, yellow coffee cup, and so on. I guess I'm trying to bring the colors of nature and SFG inside. Just wish I had tile on the floor the same color as the dirt in my yard, after all my kitchen motto is "You can eat off of my floor anytime, there is always crumbs on it"!!!

Broccoli, Cauliflower and Cabbage are late spring harvests.

Re: Window Quilt
I'm looking for patterns for flower applique's that I can tweak for those 3. I do have some very interesting materials for those, kind of a washed look, that I want to use.

This is a groovy idea! How about asparagus for a spring crop?
