burt animal compost?
My hubby has a freind who bought a small farm a few years ago. He cleaned out the barns... dug a big pit , piled it in, and burnt it. It burnt to about half it size. Is this compost any good?? Also how old does compost need to be to be called compost?
THANKS!!

Re: burt animal compost?
I am curious as to why he would burn it? While that may get rid of any pathogens, it would also get rid of nutrients, I would think but I don't know. Anyway, I would put it in my compost bin in fall, leave it over the winter with everything else I add to it, and as I turn it and it gets mixed in with everything else, I would then use it in the early summer. But that is just me. Others may have different ideas.

I have no idea why he burnt it. I have never heard of it. It was burnt 2 years ago. I was hoping to maybe ( if it is ok) to use it in my SFG this year.

Weird! Not accounting sometimes for why people do the things they do. I would use it this year. But I am not sure how much nutrients will be in it. I would be sure to add the other four kinds that you need for sure. Best of luck.

Maybe he was trying to make some form of bio-char? Organic Gardening had a really good article on bio-char a few issues ago. I don't know if this is what he was trying to achieve, but I can't think of any other reason for burning the stuff.
