I have something in my flower beds making small " holes " in the mulch. They aren't dug all the way through, kind of like a wide divot. I put some repels-all around all the flower beds to hopefully eliminate the problem but wonder what pest is doing it.

I seem to have the same thing, I wondered if it was dirt daubers.

I wouldn't rule out squirrels, either. This time of year they are really searching for winter's nuts. I get those holes in my yard twice a year.....when the tree rats are most active.

Yeah I have some divots all over my yard and sometimes I think we live in squirrel national headquarters! That is what we've always assumed they are but we've never seen the "culprits"

Oh I've seen 'em. Usually, with one eye winking at them, though. I just wish I could do that in the city. I would control the problem a little bit.

Here's something I MAY try, though. There is a link on youtube called SquirrelLauncher. It's so darned funny. And, I have just enough loose screws to try it.

Someone designed a catapult with surgical tubing and a collander. They pull it back and put a piece of corn in the collander. When the squirrel hops in, it's WHEEEEEE....right off the deck!

I saw another guy, the vid was taken down I think, that used a clay pigeon launcher in the same way. Bait it....and launch it. This guy, however, swore the same squirrels came back for more.

It's hard to hurt a squirrel. They fall from trees quite often and just scurry on. I may copy the collander for fun, but I may just stick with the SquirrelBungee, too. A piece of corn cob on a bungee cord is a bouncing good time for me, too.

Back to the OPs question, is it that the mulch is simply disturbed or are there actual gouges out of soil? Like divots in the lawn?

I need to make sure my husband doesn't read this. It would tempt him too much. We live in squirrel central. Purdue's campus is very close, and they are rampant there because of all the nut trees and the lack of squirrel "control". My sheepdog gives them a run for their money in our yard (caught one once!), but alas, he has to sleep sometime.

Post  FarmerValerie on 4/2/2011, 8:47 am

I was out in the garden yesterday and noticed I had quite a few of those holes. They are the size of a pencil, and faily deep. When I was messing investigating one of them my 12yo daughter asked what I was doing. I explained I was checking out the holes, she got that 12yo daughter look and tone (I sent my mother an appology note 2 weeks after the birth of my daughter-I knew what I was in for) and informed me they were for the wasps, dirt daubbers. and/or ground hornets. I then remembered we have observd them coming and going out of their holes before. If they are the later, try to get something to take care of them, they will sting you.

Thanks! These aren't deep, they are like someone was just digging in the mulch a little, just enough to make a little bowl type shape. I will keep a lookout for the wasps though, I hate those things regardless if they pollinate or not!

That does not sound like my holes, so I would not worry too much. I will be watching mine though, if mine are wasps (not the red kind-I'm allergic) I'll be keeping mine, they kill bad bugs.
