Sense of humor check...................am I the only one tempted to make jokes here? Maybe it's my sleep deprivation.
In all seriousness, though, we should definitely use something with some gripping power. I used screws, and the 4" screws at that. I had to pre-drill a pilot hole through the first piece of wood and a little into the second. But, I did that with a drill bit of smaller diameter than the screw itself. Those babies are rock solid.
Carry on.

No, you are not the only one tempted... But I am trying to be good for Lent...
I used shorter screws on my boxes, predilled the holes on the facing board but did not worry about the butt of the board being screwed...
OK BBG - have fun with that one...

I have gripping issues too and I managed the pilot holes plus screws just fine.
I made the boxes on the living room floor (when my husband was out ) and my main problem was keeping the corners square. I found it helped to put a spare ceramic floor tile down on the floor, and line the two bits of wood up against the edges after drilling the pilot holes. If you can find a helper to brace the wood that you are screwing into then it is much easier, otherwise I guess you could set the free end against a wall.
LOL - I used a case of shotgun shells to help make the right angle!
