Hi, This will be my first SQFT Garden!! I have attempted 2 different row gardens in the past but never kept at them long enough to appreciate gardening!! I have wanted to do a Square Foot Garden for several years and this is the year! I am waiting for a 4x4 to be delivered and trying to put my garden plans together. I am interested in organic food and will be trying to plant heirloom plants and seeds as much as possible. I have some questions that I'll post on the appropriate (I hope!) forum...

Looking forward to this summer!

I am wanting too many vine plants for my 4x4, first off, lol... I'll have to nix a couple - don't have the idea of succession planting firmly in my head yet so will have to figure that out as I get there... but basically - lettuce, tomato, bell pepper, cucumber, yellow squash, onion, spinach, swiss chard, beets, green beans, carrots, that sort of thing... the basics, nothing fancy for my first time out!! I ordered a 4x4 and tomato tower from SFG and am poking about in local nurseries looking for what I need for the soil and plants. I am interested lately in eating locally and more organic. We have a decent farmer's market May-Sept, but I am itching to try my own garden... visions of future additions to my 4x4 dancing in my head and I don't even have any Mel's Mix made up yet, lol...

Howdy neighbor, I get down your way from time to time. I'm in the extrememe NE corner of TX, Texarkana area. My Mother in Law lives in Ore City, I love driving down there this time of year, the dogwoods are in full bloom, and thanks to the Lady Bird Johnson Foundation, all the native wildflowers are blooming along the hiways and byways. That drive is one of the most beautiful drives I've ever been on.

We love to help, so ask away!!! There are a bunch of us from TX on here, and growing in numers too. Check out the regional forums on the main page, your region is the lower south, mine too, and there are a bunch of us who have the same problems and triumphs. Wishing you much success!!!

Another convert. How wonderful.

One way to grow more in your garden is to make sure you use all of your squares as many times as possible. That means short days to maturity spring crops replaced with warm weather crops, then some plantings for fall harvest. It also keeps you eating a wide variety of home grown produce.
I understand about not enough vertical space. I will be using Mel's Mix in 5 gallon buckets (with some type of trellis structure) to grow some of my tomatoes and free up a bit of room on my trellises for cucs, squash, beans, etc.

I haven't been to Texarkana, but sounds like I may wanna make the drive up there to see all the beauty!! The azaleas are all blooming here in Tyler right now and oh, so pretty!!!
