Compost Empty Compost

Post  Debbie Schreck Sat Mar 26, 2011 11:40 am

I mixed my compost last week and stored it in a blue plastic tub with the lid 90% covering the box. We went to mix more dirt this week and when we opened the compost box, the compost was covered in a light grey/white film. Is this mold/mildew and is it still usable? My compost is made up of cow manure, hen manure, mushroom compost, horse manure, and worm castings. The dirt is very expensive and I don't want to not use it, but I don't want my plants to be affected by something bad for them, either. Thanks for any advice/input.

Some of mine did the same thing when wrapped in the tarp waiting to be put into the last box. We had several days of rain so couldn't get everything done at the same time. I just spread it out and let the sun get to it for a day. Hasn't seemed to make a difference. I just harvested my first bok choy from transplants put in on Mar 4.

Welcome Debbie Compost 396615

Glad you joined us. Don't worry about the bloom on your compost, just stir it up really good before you use it.

Hope everything is going well for your SFG. Please keep us updated on your progress
