starting Peas inside? Empty starting Peas inside?

Post  PeggyC on 3/24/2011, 8:52 pm

I'm in zone 4B. It's still super cold. last spring frost date is May 23rd ish.

I really want to start my peas from seed but have trouble believing they'll do ok outside. Plus, Hail season is almost here. I'm not in a rush to start babysitting outdoor plants, when nothing else will go in the ground for another 8-10 weeks.

So, any reason why I SHOULD NOT start peas indoors? The package doesn't even give the option.

Thanks!

Historically, they don't transplant well. For me it's just easier to wait and plant them outside when the time is right. http://howtogardenguide.com/2009/03/28/growing-sugar-snap-peas/
Try this Johnny's seed starting calculator I think you can direct sow peas safely in your area in about 2-3 weeks.

Our Master Gardener at the Community Garden has started Sugar Snap peas for the children's garden. Really just trying to give the kids a jump start on their muddy garden (over 12 inches of rain in the last 3 weeks). To be honest, my transplants last fall were not very successful, but we will intersperse the sugar snap seedlings with direct sown seeds to give the kids a good chance for peas.
