Newbie ? from S. Dartmouth MA
So I just started setting up my SFG. So far i put in a 4x4 strawberry pyramid (plants r in) and another 4x4 (only shallots in so far). So as im digging post holes for fence my neighbor tells me i should cover plants as we're gonna get snow 2morrow. I checked weather and temps arent gonna b bad and it looks like mostly rain, maybe an hour of snow. Should i b worried? Should i throw a tarp over pyramid to be on the safe side?
Thanks,Shawn
Thanks,Shawn

Hi Shawn and to the SFG Forum! I would suggest that you could forgo the covering, they would probably like the moisture. But if you would like to cover your strawbs it wouldn't hurt them. I wouldn't bother covering the shallots. The weather will be improving again after tomorrow.

Welcome, Shawn! I agree with Camprn....at this time of year, a little bit either way won't make much of a difference.

Strawberrys are ornery, you can find them blooming under the snow sometimes. No experience with shallots, but they are onions, they should be fine.
(Also, I am totally jealous of your vast plantings of both of those!!!!)

Welcome
Welcome to the forum, Shawnlx.
Your shallots will be fine, too. Onion family members can take freezing. I've planted shallots in fall and let them overwinter, and there is at least one variety of perennial onions that comes up year after year. (Egyptian Walking onions.)
Established strawberries do fine with freezes, although freezing temps will kill any blossoms in full bloom. If you see a bloom with a black center, you know that one will not produce a berry. But you should pull all the blooms of June bearers the first year anyway.
Keep us posted on how your garden grows.

I can attest to this one. My Egyptian Walking Onions survive -30F just fine, and not only come back, but will swallow your house faster than a crazed squash!

PM me your address? I'll send you some rampicante seed and you can experiment to see which one eats your house faster. (I have some EWO's planted new last fall myself... very curious to see how they grow!)
