I plan on ordering my seeds from Territorial, but their live plants seem to be mostly sold in much larger numbers than I need.

I toured the local garden centers yesterday; it's too early for most stuff but Farmington Gardens had strawberries for $9.99 each. At that rate I'd spend $160 just filling my strawberry 4-square! I'm starting out from bare lawn, building everything new, and am already a little shell-shocked by how much this is all going to cost; right now the strawberries are the most expensive item on my spreadsheet, even more than the wood. There has to be a better way! For comparison, Territorial sells strawberry plants in lots of 25 for $15.25, but they only have a couple of varieties. I want it all! Smile

Jan are you sure that is the each price. That sounds like it could be 12 to 25 plants, but you would know better than my self

Deborah....who once bought 2 asparagus plants only to find out she had two dozen to plant.

It sure looked that way to me, but the next time I go that way I'll stop and take a second look.

Janine, having just moved from that area (Vernonia, actually), I'm sure you can find much better prices. Although, I too think that must have been a half-flat price. Some of my favorite haunts:

Woodstock Nursery in Buxton. Not sure when they open, and they only are open spring until the weekend before July 4th. This is my absolute favorite.

Glenn Walters has two sales to the public per year. Their next one is probably not until June. The deals are incredible, although not much in the way of edibles.

Larson Farm Nursery in Hillsboro off of Glencoe and Zion Church Rd (I believe).

New Leaf Greenhouse in Cornelius. They're located on the road (Cornelius-Schefflin?) that runs past the Cornelius Fred Meyer from TV Hwy out toward hwy 26.

Check out Fred Meyer garden center. They usually have pretty good prices on their starts.

Also, check craigslist under Farm & Garden. I found a very reasonable organic seed source in Forest Grove.

Great, thanks! I'll also add that New Seasons has put out plants now, with most of them being $2.99. They don't have a lot, but what they do have looks healthy and they have a pretty good variety (just usually only one or two varieties of each thing). I did see several types of strawberries, which is what I was interested in.

Best place to buy plants near Portland? Empty plants near Portland

You might want to start looking at local farmers' markets. There are usually one or two booths with plant starts. Oh, yes! I too saw the plants at New Seasons, especially the helebores with double-petaled flowers. Only able to resist them was because my arms were already full of purchased items. Sigh.
